Detailing chat

Hi I've been thinking it'd be nice to have a thread where simple questions that people don't want to create a thread for, could go. Or any chat related to detailing.

I've a question. If I've put a wax on, then a sealant. Then after a few weeks or w/e I'm thinking the shine isn't what it was. (After washing obviously) Can I apply wax on top of whatever sealant and wax is left from the first time, or do I have to remove the remaining sealant + wax first?

Just a heads up to anyone looking for Auto Brite products that i'd highly recommend MMC Autoparts in Banbridge. Was able to pick up a couple of extra snow foam bottles, some tar remover and alloy cleaner etc. They don't have a postage/courier option to the South yet but they are working on it.

Probably worth a visit for anyone heading to Newry or Belfast as there only 5 mins of the dual carriageway.

Was able to get mine done yesterday after I got back. Defiantly need to get the wheels off at some stage as they've a lot of tar in the barrels now.

Got a small very shallow mark/scratch on the high gloss plastic pillar at the driver side door. Its about an inch long, and I dont feel it if I rub my finger nail across it. Any suggestions for removal? Its not obvious at all except to me. I see it every time I get in the car

Pharmacies stock it too as far as I know

IPA can only really be bought in pharmacies under the term rubbing alcohol. Motor factors stock something similar as pre-paint or paint prep i.e to wipe a panel down before painting.

Note that IPA will not remove polish from paintwork as effectively as Gtechniq Panel Wipe.

I've a question around paint protection. I'm a total novice when it comes to this, so hoping to get some advise.

I've just picked up a new car. I didn't go for the paint protection 'option' from the dealer, seems way over priced.

I'm looking for any recommendations for paint protection I can apply myself.

On my previous car, in terms of washing, I had been using the AutoGlym Polar Series range. It's designed to use used to with a power washer. It's 3-step, snow foam, wash and then a seal. The seal is only applied every few months.

Beyond regular washing and quarterly seal, is there anything else I should be applying to it?

Guys can someone recommend a decent Pre wash please?

I think its what im missing to shift the heavier dirt, before snow foaming. Particularly around lower panels etc.

If a car is very dirty I just use Surfex HD, I use it for paintwork, door jams, interior, engine bay, wheel arches etc pretty much the whole car once you dilute it to the appropriate ratios

Cheers man, I have a bottle of that there at 10:1 that id use for tires and shuts etc. Would ya just use that before snow foam etc?

Depending on how dirty it is, I would use surfex HD @ 10:1, 4:1 might be a little strong for regular use and may strip your LSP.

I gave up washing my own cars a few years back with kids coming along not having time etc

I might try get back into it now , but realistically what’s the best case scenario time wise for a decent wash routine ? I’m low on time and when I used do it I’d take hours washing and drying etc

I’d like to do it but in an efficient way, any tips for a quick but decent routine including the bits I’d need !

Have got a bucket with grit guard, garden hose, washing nut for car and wheels.
Turtle wax car shampoo and wax
Tyre gel.
Drying towels

Anything else needed for regular washing?
Would aim to wax as well....any recommendations or alternatives? Its a white car if that makes any difference.

I wouldn't bother with the Turtle Wax shampoo unless it is pH neutral. Get a good pH neutral shampoo and finish with a wax sealant spray. TW wax sealant is both reasonably priced and very impressive.

Recently purchased a 08 Saab 9-3 aero sports wagon.
Paint work is fairly rough it's never going to be perfect but I'd still like to tidy it up if possible.

Anyone care to advise on how hard or soft the paint is generally on Saab's?

It does linger depending on what surface you're washing the car on. When I had gravel the smell stayed almost constantly. Now hat I have tarmac the smell is gone after my snowfoam step (always do wheels first). However you always need a shower afterwards because when AutoWheel atomizes it goes everywhere including my hair, clothes etc. I even have a different pair of runners specifically for doing the car because of this.
