If Ireland gets to keep the €13 billion Apple money tomorrow

Atlantic Dawn

So tomorrow the General Court of the European Union will decide whether Ireland is owed €13 billion in tax from Apple.

I prupose that everyone in the country is given a €2500 voucher to spend on Apple tat to lighten the blow on the company and promote technology in the country.

Any other ideas on what to blow the money on?

Not at all. I was surprised that there seems to be this idea amongst what appears to be a majority of the populace that this is money that somehow belongs to Ireland. It was even being proposed as a source of finance in the election manifesto of some of the political parties over there.

Most of it will be claimed by other countries - 200m already gone that way. There won't be any windfall and there will most likely be less tax income in the future

Obviously we won't get to keep it all. Its just some things I'd try to do if we did.

Its like the threads what would you do if you won the lotto.

13 billion is nothing compared to what we get from us multinationals over the years and what we will get keeping them well onside into the future.

There's also a myth that the only reason companies like Facebook, Google, and Microsoft are in Ireland is because of the low corporate tax rate. That's only partially true. There's also the language, favourable time zone, relative lack of bureaucracy, political stability, and a myriad of other factors.

Why "most likely"

Apple's tax arrangements have long since changed, and so have many other US MNCs.

I'm not of the belief that Ireland would be entitled to anything more than a very small fraction of this money, I'm just curious about the consequence of "most likely there will be less tax income in the future" since that regime is already extinct.

They are here because of the money.

We have a s**t public transport system, it’s difficult to attract staff because of the cost of living. Can’t buy a house, can’t rent one. You have to build a base in Dublin because nobody wants to work anywhere else. Then staff do move and complain because they can’t get into office.

Everyone wants “Dublin wages”

Don’t kid yourself, it’s the money and that’s it, every other European country can offer better but just charge more for the privaledge

It was never ours. The eu want us to collect it on behalf of the the other member states. I'd be surprised if 5 percent of it was for Ireland. Storm in a teacup springs to mind

I don't think you see my point, maybe I didn't make it clearly though.

Ireland has already done the correct thing by challenging the Apple Tax judgment. However, should the decision go against Ireland, and again on appeal, and then Ireland gains some fraction of the Apple Tax payment -- how would this really impact MNCs here?

The regime which is in dispute has already gone extinct. Apple has, by itself, altered its tax planning. It has been paying large amounts of tax to the US since, I think, 2017.18.

All that is in question here is the an old tax bill. The Irish tax regime, at present, is not iimpugned at all.

So I cannot see why anyone would make the claim that it's at risk.
