I respect him for that. And that's where my respect ends. He is a one trick pony who was gifted opponents by the UFC due to his ability to draw in the masses. He has a left hand and nothing more, like Nate Diaz the scholar put it, his opponents believed his hype, not him. His win over Aldo was lightning in a bottle. Lucky with Porier, Alvarez bought into the hype and fought stupid. Diaz took him out and in my view won the rematch. Gets demolished by Khabib and then chooses to fight a 2 streak loss Cerrone who suffered the same fate as Alverez. He doesn't have the skills to be the top of the game and his bank balance lessened the blow. I think he will have huge regrets when he is an old man. He could have kept fighting and kept the money but he is so desperately afraid to lose neither him nor the UFC will let him fight real opponents. Khabib will not give him a rematch and he will never be champion again while Khabib is still fighting. As a man outside the octagon? He is a scumbag. Through and through. He's now just an extremely wealthy scumbag. I would put money down he will end up locked up for a period of time. He's a charlatan that so many bought into. I hope he fades into obscurity.

It might seem weird putting him on a pedestal with the likes Messi, but stars of other sports all have to share the stage. Messi is a superstar, but there's also Ronaldo. And Pele, Maradona, etc, from the past. In MMA there's only Conor. Who comes close? Ronda maybe, but she's nowhere near Conor. A lot of people actually think the sport is called UFC, and that's because of Conor. As for earnings, you have to take the sport in to account. There are footballers playing for basement premier league clubs getting as much per werk as some fighters make per fight.

The point I was making is that Conor achieved elite world mega stardom, and had he continued to perform consistently at the sport like those others he would be just as famous. Now I think he will be more associated with the likes of George Best, Zlatan, Rodman, Arrancha Sanchez, the beast Edmundo and Jim Kelly.
Gintonious wrote: What was I thinking, mentioning stats and achievements. So silly of me, we all know the mark of a great sportsman is if people mimic your walk. Can't say I would place him ahead of Hamilton, with him being a 6 time F1 world champion and all that.
eagle eye wrote: » Who mentioned stats or achievements? Purely on being world famous he belongs in that bracket. Well ahead of Hamilton I'd guess and Brady. My favourite sportsperson is Tom Brady btw.
Gintonious wrote: Ah yes, the walk really puts him in the same ballpark as Jordan, Messi, Ronaldo, Hamilton etc. He is probably second lowest on that list of athletes in terms of net worth, behind Brady I think. He doesn't compare in terms of stats or achievements in his sport. Not even close.
