I know this was discussed recently but I can’t seem to find it,
I sold my car in early March and was hoping to pick up a replacement shortly afterwards but that didn’t happen because of the current situation.
Anyhoo, I had kept the insurance going as I was going to transfer it to whatever I bought, but I bit the bullet and cancelled the policy on Monday. This is the first time in about 16 years I don’t have a car insured, and it looks like I will be without a car insured for the foreseeable.
I know that I will lose my NCB after two years, but is there anything else I should consider?
I’m still a named driver on the wife’s policy.

A condition of you being a named driver on your wife’s car may well have been that you had your own car and insurance now you don’t. So would be worth checking that. Obviously the year you cancelled you can’t count as a years NCB. I can’t think of much else.

Splitting rubber is never a good idea, leads to expensive bills down the line.
I've seen boardsies have to sell some nice metal just to cover the bills.

I didn't want to start a thread about this, I'm hoping someone here can help me out.
My car is SORN, it's insured, it has no NCT.

I need to take it down to a my mechanic to have the timing set properly and a couple of small bits to get it spot in for when the NCT centres finally reopen.

Am I legally allowed to drive it to the workshop and back for it's repairs please?

Any help or advice is appreciated.

No.... But how long is the test out may be in your favour....

If it's out a year or more it will definitely be an issue but a few months as they've been closed then you will be able to but have proof that's what you are doing if possible.

Hope everyone is doing well. I have been taking a self imposed break from social media over the past few weeks due to the stuff ongoing and wanting to just enjoy working on my car.

The NCT is out more than a year alright. I've "just bought" it at the start of this month though. When I went online to declare it off the road it said that the NCT was due from the start of May.

Are you 100% sure about this? I'm fairly sure I saw something about it on the motortax website that it's permitted if it's for repairs for the NCT.

I go and have a check myself, cheers.

It must still have NCT on it to do so this is why the option to do 90 days before it's out is there....

You are right about the sorn though as this is the only time you can legally drive without valid tax....
Once to a booked test or booked in repair.

I'll take a wild guess and assume there is no tax on it either. Shouldn't be driven with no tax. Tbh with you it should actually be trailered to the garage for repairs. You live in the area so i wouldn't know but how far from you is the garage. How about check points are they regularly on the route to the garage. You could take a chance driving it there but that is up to you and also the garda if they catch you. Some will just wave you on others would hunt you down.

Agreed - for the first 2 weeks or so I went through at least one everyday haven’t been through one in over a week. It’s no coincidence the roads and towns are getting busier too.

Thinking of bringing my car to BM workshop out near Newcastle soon for gearbox service and couple of other things.

Two questions

Has anyone dealt with them before ? There reviews on FB seem great so I suppose that's a start.

Secondly after next Monday would I be allowed travel to them ? Google maps tells me I'm 18 kms away from them.

Theres a bus stop outside my house, and it has been getting busier and busier as the days go by. Any other bus I've seen around Dublin recently too seems to be carrying a lot more people than they were a few weeks ago.

We're getting plenty of enquiries on cars, with texts and calls etc, people saying they'll come from the other end of the country to view/buy.

I haven'y been out for about 3 weeks but went through the local town today and was far busier than the last few times I have been through it.

Well lads, bit of a brain blip moment on my part. I ordered 5w30 C3 instead of the correct spec 5w30 C2 engine oil of Micks Garage for my 2011 2.0 D4D DPF Avensis. I think I should be ok to use it for one service but could anyone confirm if it may potentially cause me problems. Below is a link to the oil I got. Aiming to do oil and filter change as soon as possible if I'm good to go.

Many local factors will deliver after they take payment over phone..... or do COD.

If you aren't overly close to them then they probably won't of course.

I got an email from Frank Keane VW saying both their VW dealers are open for sales and service from Monday by appointment only. I have the golf booked in end of next week for a service in a more local dealer. I won’t miss the pinging anyway.
