Space of fence posts

Having a disagreement with the old lad about how far apart we drive the posts for a 4 strand barb wire fence and the distance to strainers.
It's for a suckler herd so bull , cows and calves to be penned in.I say 9' but he maintains it should be 6'6"

Good loser

Up against a ditch/fence two strands wire could do' stakes 8/9 ft apart. Keep out a foot from butt of ditch and plant a line of whitethorn quicks in that space.

Sorry to start up an old tread but I have 50m of fencing to do at the weekend and am going to put up a barb wire fence as its fairly open to the road after getting the hedges coppiced. I was thinking off 3 rows off barb wire but I'm unsure of the spacing required between posts and also would I need to strain the strainers with a H frame? I will be using good posts 6ft posts and 7ft strainers. Also is 3 rows enough? Don't want to run electric as small calves do be there and they sometimes don't see the fence when they're small.

I will also be doing electric fencing in that field different run but 50m also will be using 7ft strainers and 5ft posts with a 10m spacing is this ok?

We use around ten yards here, hard to be completely exact as it's foot stepped. But that's only two strand barbed. Sucklers also, but we don't run a bull.

Would consider 4 strands too much. Three is enough; keep bottom one well off the ground .
Use creosoted stakes about 8' apart as intermediates.

At this stage I have done miles upon miles of fencing. Mostly sheep wire and barb. I would always use sheepwire even if the fence was for cattle as imo it gives the fence a structure and durability that will last a working lifetime. I use two 8 ft strainers for each H frame. I insist on the Esb pole cutoffs from pdm. However, I try to only use the agriknives posts because they are without doubt the best post around. They are space 3 paces apart.and not giant steps. No more than that. It doesn’t actually take that many more stakes even over a fair stretch. You won’t have to look at the fence again if it’s done this way. If there is even the slightest change of direction, use a strainer

I had looked at that. Everything covered , type of posts/type of wire and steeples. Etc
Poultry,deer and deep etc .
Spacing of posts for post and rail only.
Nothing for barbed wire that I could see

I’d have all my electric fence posts at 12 metres apart, 5,6” posts and 4 to 5” diameter. It’s plenty strong as long as you have proper straining posts in the corners (7’ and 7 to 8” diameter) and the wire pulled tight. It’s also a very handy spacing for when you’re spreading fertiliser!

6ft PDM . BIL is fencing contractor and he did it for me over a few evenings and told me what materials to get. Its up 4 or 5 years

Drove them with my post driver and used 8ft strainer posts.

Is he paying for the posts? If so, go ahead and bang them in at 6’6....It is probably a little bit too close, but there’s no official distance, and the fence will be stronger for it...

Can’t help you with the space of the fence posts but the old lad is usually right and it’s easier to agree.
