What! There's about 100 in ICU. Good thing too since we only have ~500 ICU beds.

I would say there is zero chance of the Arts festival going ahead. Races probably behind closed doors

As for the conspiracy theory, I tend not to spend a lot of time on them. By their very nature they are designed to encourage paranoia, mistrust of evidence and science and tend to be based on nothing more than factless articles

Would be madness to go calling off either at this stage. What’s the rush? Both are over 3 months away. China is starting to return to some sort of normality and they only went into lock down in January. Don’t understand the interest in calling these things off now. Also don’t go comparing them to Wimbledon, the Olympics, etc. which are on a completely different scale and have qualifying, etc.

I'm sure that we won't have a Galway International Arts Festival this year. But - if we can keep disease transmission down now - we will hopefully see at least some kind of Galway Arts Festival - likely on a far smaller scale. Hell, it might even be the Fringe Festival dressed up a little.

If I was an events organiser, I'd be spending my time thinking about two or three scenarios, and what would need to be done to make smaller things happen, so that when I'm free to do stuff, there's a plan to follow.

In the last recession, there was a LOT of creative energy suddenly out of work: people had time to ponder and to learn new skills, and lots of initiatives emerged. Same thing can happen now for some, anyway. The general anxiety levels mean it won't be easy - but 2010 was a pretty damn anxious time too, and it was a lot harder to sign-on then.

Spot on.
Wimbledon is an international event that has competitors from all over the globe travelling to compete. The key word is travelling.
I suspect that there will be little or no international travel this summer or maybe even until a vaccine is found.
However domestically we may have this under control with strict quarantine measures for anyone entering the country in a couple of months this time.
What is the advantage of canceling now? It's not going to have any impact on life in the next three months if you cancel now, so what's the problem with leaving them pencilled in for now.
However if you cancel them now and we have some semblance of normality back it would probably be much harder to get them up and running again.

Just in relation to Wimbledon since it was referenced a few times... Wimbledon was insured in case of a pandemic. So if they waited another couple of months to decide what to do, then they might not have got the payout.

Reallly hoping Tulca may be able to go ahead in some way in November.
Shame the earlier exhibitions were curtailed.
Launch got hit by Hurricane Jose then exhibition in Nun's Island did get like 5 days. I guess taht's not as bad as it might have been.
Sort of glad that both galwayArts Centre and 126 Gallery got some kind of launch and then a performance shortly before things closed down.

Hope everybody is able to return by end of year or whenever things do reopen.
Have enjoyed a lot of things in both places.

The races themselves will more than likely go ahead but behind closed door so the course itself while losing out a lot will get significant tv money. The city will suffer massively though, pubs and restaurants etc rely heavily on the races to make their year profitable.

That being said no decision should be made yet.

There isnt a notion of any racing happening in Galway this year, behind closed doors or not far too many would need to travel to make it happen, it may feel like it to some but it's really not the end of the world

Races won’t go ahead. The actual horse racing is a side show to the main event - boozing and women in ridiculous outfits. Without all that, there’s not much left to bother with.

Unless there is some massive deterioration in th situation it is almost guaranteed to go ahead behind closed doors, as usual you haven’t a clue what you are talking about.

The races is over 3 months away, things might not be back to normal by then but it would be very surprising if restrictions are not eased more than enough to allow behind closed doors racing.

It would be massively helped if all the knobs walking the prom etc stayed at home like they have been told to.

There is far from insignificant tv rights money for the racecourse and they will be doing their level best to ensure it goes ahead even without the crowds. On top of the the bookies will be massively pushing for racing in general to get back running ASAP. It was the last sport to finish and it will be the first one back too.

As I said there is a very high chance the races will go ahead just without the crowds.

I was listening to a doctor on the radio this morning who said it’s madness to expect to wait for a vaccine before we start to attempt to return to normal as it might never come.

+1,racing is a massive industry that does nor rely on the pubs and clubs or alchohol.
Neither does it rely on, as some begrudger here calls "women in ridiculous outfits.

If a lot of the courses in Ireland and England was relying on attendances they would be closed a long time ago.TV rights is what keeps racecourses going

Racing could be back as early as the 15 of May behind closed doors and has worked well with the rules set down in a massive area of any course with,no punters,no owners,no bookies,no restaurants or bars, cant even get a cup of tea,jockeys park beside the weigh room and leave immediately after riding in their respective races to their cars,no saunas.

Will be a pity for Galway if the races is held behind closed doors as a lot of people counting on it as an event to maybe save their business,but if restrictions are lifted and stay that way then racing will go ahead without pubs.

Let’s concentrate on social distancing correctly and reduce the death total. 77 is very high, things won’t even start to return until that’s in the low low teens

At some stage soon the government needs a proper plan to get things back up and running and get the country out of panic mode.

I am all in favour of reopening things in stages like the UK traffic light plan. Events and sport need to get going again there are kids and young people in this country who need a future and a social outlet. Those at risk or who are ill have a very capable health service to take care of them.now .
I would hold off till mid June if I were the race committee and hopefully get agreement on a race programme however limited days wise .
