All the business shutdowns, social distancing, and isolations were only meant to flatten the curve and reduce the spike (this coronavirus will be with us for a very long time and just about everyone will eventually get it). That flattening of the curve has been accomplished here. Thankfully we have an adult in the White House whose instincts on this matter have been right all along. He's the President and needs to consider all the implications of any decision, including social, economic, and the public health. He’s not a doctor who has the luxury to only concern himself with the medical aspects. Anyone with half a brain knows we need to reopen the country for business safely, and soon!

notobtuse wrote: » Actually it’s a balance between the two. There is such a thing called “interstate commerce” that the Constitution grants power to the executive branch. I guess if a state can live with only things produced WITHIN the state then the governors can make the rules, but there is NOT ONE SINGLE state that can.

ohnonotgmail wrote: » well that is one way to guarantee that trump loses that state in november.
notobtuse wrote: » Not necessarily. Look at what is going on in the state of Wisconsin. That is one of the three blue states credited with giving Trump the win in 2016. The DNC has committed to turning them back to deep blue again in time for the 2020 election. But therir first-term governor has put into place rules that are described as idiocy over the coronavirus. There is already a petition with over 150,000 signers and growing calling for her recall. She's a terrible governor and hypocrite but is a very vocal hater of Trump so of course she is being touted as a top tier VP pick of Biden because of it.

Only Cuomo in NY, Newsome (D, California) and DeWine (R, Ohio) have had higher approvals of how they have handled this. The reason notobtuse was yammering on about it was because Ted Cruz was spreading fake news about this yesterday, claiming she signed social distancing measures while standing next to 11 people, but it turned out the photo he used was from a year ago. Story here - https://www.dailydot.com/debug/ted-cruz-gretchen-whitmer-twitter/The reason notobtuse confused this with wisconsin is because Wisconsin decided to extend their elections from last week (democrat primary, and a bunch of local elections including the WI supreme Court) by 6 days when it came to mail in voting, to allow people to cast their ballots remotely during the coronavirus. Conservative Supreme Court judge Brett Kavanaugh voted to overrule this, and lied in his reasoning about the preexisting laws in wisconsin elections. At the same time as doing this, they also had almost every voting station closed. Milwaukee, the same Dublin in terms of population, had FIVE voting stations in total. In places like Green Bay which is about the size of (edit) all of county Galway people found themselves still with lots of people ahead of them in the voting queue as late as 11.30pm having been there for over 3 hours in freezing cold weather (Wisconsin st this time of year is colder than Ireland in winter). Another city with 72,000 people had a grand total of one single voting station fore veryoen to converge on. Imagine all of Dublin voting in just 5 stations, especially during this spread. Basically, in order to be allowed to vote, most in Wisconsin were deliberately forced to congregate in huge numbers, close together, and risk getting covid or lose their right to vote. That is what was decided, but people like notobtuse - who will otherwise transparently feign concern over states rights and democracy - had nothing to say on it. This was brought to notobtuses attention already, but they refused to address it and decided to pretend they care about democracy. Here is a post outlining other instances of the Republicans trying to curtail and undermine democracy that was put to notobtuse in response. To absolutely no surprise, they refused to respond. This is worth keeping in mind when reading posts by notobtuse. https://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showpost.php?p=113124184&postcount=769 Also, the supreme Court came to this decision remotely, as they are practicing social distancing because they understand the coronavirus is extremely easy to spread and can very easily kill anyone who gets it. The decision was so unpopular that across wisconsin there were heavy swings towards the democrats, which means we will see further efforts to disenfranchise voters in that state in the next six months, and people like notobtuse are only delighted about this if they feel democracy won't work in their favour. When you are talking with the poster notobtuse, you are talking with someone who despises the very concept of democracy or the will of the people to elect officials that they feel will represent them best. This is just one of many examples of Americans who have become deeply, deeply radicalised over the course of the last 10-15 years.

The WHO said that the outbreak did not yet constitute a public emergency of international concern and there was "no evidence" of the virus spreading between humans outside of China.
notobtuse wrote: » There are plenty of fine scientists working there, but apparently none are running WHO. WHO helped China to suppress information about the outbreak in the early stages which undoubtedly causes thousands of unnecessary deaths. Perhaps Trump’s mandate will cause a much needed shakeup at the top levels of WHO.
