In general proper hand washing is as good as using a hand sanitiser. However for people such as my mother who is in her eighties and suffering from cancer hand sanitisers can be vital. She needs to have one in her hall so that visitors make sure they don't carry in any infection.

We cannot get hold of any, but ut my local chemist told me that when they got a stock in recently people were grabbing handfuls and they were sold out in minutes.

Can I just appeal to people to be aware that if, as a healthy low risk family, they are depleting shops of hand sanitisers, many of which will remain in cupboards unused, they are depriving ill and vulnerable people and their families of a simple way of keeping a loved one safe.

Please, if stocks are replenished, don't hog them and stock pile.. Leave enough to keep ill and vulnerable n people safe.

I don't even know why pharmacies allow random people to buy masks and sanitizers in bulk... they generally show up on Donedeals or Adverts.ie for extortionate prices, such as a box of 100 masks for €150.

These people profiteering off people's health should be cracked down on...

To be honest it's not a product I use, I've bought them in the past for if I'm out and about and I need to change a nappy and no facilities.

I suffer badly with dermatitis on my hands, so the alcohol stings the bejaysus out of me. The cuts then open and bleed so really defeats the purpose. I usually wear normal gloves when out and about.

Having said that if they were a product I use I would definitely have a stockpile (I stockpile everything else).

Has anyone actually seen any for sale anywhere? I mean at normal prices, as I'm not about to buy into profiteering, but I would like one bottle for myself and one for my OH for when we have to go out and will inevitably end up touching things.

We've enough soap anyway, and thats what i'll be mostly relying upon once I'm at home or anywhere I can wash my hands.

I was just down in my local Boots and they've had no hand sanitizer in for days and said they wouldnt get a deliver until Thursday, but theres no guarentee that it will have hand sanitizer in. I'm surprised at how badly the supply chain on that product specifically has been effected - I can only assume institutional buyers are getting it before it gets to the end consumer? Other products that have run short (toilet paper, hand soap etc) are being restocked but I've not seen one bottle of hand sanitizer in my local shops since this began.

I bought one pack of multipurpose anti bac wipes so i can wipe down my phone and handbag etc if I've been out. I normally hate wipes so will try not to use this too much. I've also bought a bottle of detol and will put a bit in with my usual cleaning solution when washing surfaces at home etc.

Not going overboard, but just trying to be sensible and take reasonable precautions.

I looked on the Purell website and each time you'd click the product the page crashed.... I did this out of curiosity when things started going crazy.

What I did see on Facebook was if you open a pack of baby wipes, pour some mouthwash, I think it needs to contain pcp or something let the wipes absorb that, the pcp is an anti septic.... That could be complete make believe, but I'm sure someone will correct me

Or you could buy the Rubbing alcohol and aloe vera and make your own.

Because the primary reason the chemist exists is to make money as fast as possible. They genuinely wouldn’t care if them making 4000 euro profit in a week by selling sanitizer ‘unrestricted’ is putting life and wellbeing at risk, not their problem. They aim to fill the till and quickly. It’s 2020 in Ireland, please nobody say they are surprised.
