There is a huge new euro shop between Maxi Zoo and Boots.
It is pretty good too:)

I have to say it is nice seeing new shops opening up locally.

I just want to say as this has been annoying me over the last few weeks- despite the running narrative, it wasn't greed in this case. I won't say any more, but would just caution people to be mindful of the fact that there are different sides to every story. It's not always as neat as what is being presented.

I'm quite surprised by that, mainly on the parking spaces. I know it's better to have nothing to encourage students to have cars but plenty of them already do and KCC have often refused developments that don't take actual base demand in to account

But Louis has the carpark on Leinster Street to do block deals with of course.

I am very dissapointed that such a prime location has been given to student accommodation, particularly when they are building so much of it on the campus.

Thats a location for another restaurant or boutique hotel or other service for the growing numbers in Maynooth.

I would have hoped the council would reject this plan.

It will benefit 100 people.

If that site was developed with other services provided it could benefit all of Maynooth.

It has been providing other services - food and drink - and the people of Maynooth haven't used them - that's why it's closed 4 times in the last few years.

I think this is an ideal use for the property. There will still be a bar as far as I know - and a restaurant.

What other services do you propose for what's been a white elephant for years now?

That would mean that the entire site could be repurposed. All of it.

The front part is protected - it's the rear building that's being demolished and rebuilt.

You're right though about the bar - I think he initially planned to keep the front bar but that's not on the plans. Just a restaurant onground floor with accommodation behind it. Smaller restaurant than I expected too - just the front area - about 14-15 tables.

I still don't get your objection - you haven't made any other suggestions and every business there since the LA has failed.

And no objections were made to the planning either.

My objection is that a prime retail location like that will be taken out of circulation and potential use for the next 30-50 years minimum.

The numbers of people in Maynooth are expanding rapidly and between the electrification of the Train services and the investment in Intel (as two examples) I can see the numbers of people living in Maynooth continuing to grow for the foreseeable.

I would have hoped that the planners had one eye on the future requirements. As things are now, its starting to become more difficult to book seats in restaurants etc and this will continue.

I think Maynooth is a fabulous spot and I suppose my primary objection is that I think this is short sighted and will not help to future proof Maynooth or its ever increasing requirements.

The numbers of people are expanding and you object to accommodation.
More difficult to book seats yet as far I can recall this is the first planning application with a restaurant in years that hasn't had multiple objections. And it has a restaurant.

MU is continuing to expand in numbers - I think they have their eye firmly on the ball here in planning for growth in population.

If you want to open another restaurant there are at least 4 units lying empty on the eastern end of Main Street right now.

There is planning permission for a sizeable restaurant above McMahons and another in the former Flood house.

McMahon got permission for a restaurant in Ivy House in 2016 - I had heard it had been rejected. Are they planning on doing anything with it?

I mean above O'Neills; ever since Caulfields became McMahons I keep getting them confused.

McMahons are holding off on the Flood one for now due to there being so many other units available is what I was told.

Anyone know the circumstances of the crash at Moyglare Hall yesterday afternoon?

With airbags etc, I guess fire brigade would be required to get people out from any kind of impact?

Narrowing the road from Moyglare Hall inbound will probably help safety, but I see ridiculous speeds on that road even though the 50kph limit starts well before Moyglare Hall but few seem to observe it.

Especially when it's these types of shops shutting down. The last thing we need are anymore cafes or that sort of thing.

Cribbins was not a great butcher shop tbh. An Siopa Milsean I believe was because of insurance costs.

And the computer repair shop - do we really need three in a town this size?

But yes - quite a few units closed around Main St.

I don't get this attitude. If we don't need more cafes then they won't open or stay open. But ones that do open are generally doing well. So why are more the last thing we need? What's wrong with more cafes if there is the business to make them viable?

I agree that I'd not knock any particular type of business on the head out of hand. If it's viable it stays open, if its not it closes.

There is a worrying trend of the demise of the high street shop though and I cannot see it being reversed.

I do most of my shopping online and don't help the situation but I'll always try to support the local shops/services that help to distinguish the existing town from the thriving town e.g. fruit and veg, butcher, post office, local shop for small messages etc . If they close you typically don't get them opening up again.

It's tough to make a living at it though. I hope we don't lose the bookstore.

As a general comment, not directed at any poster - if you're concerned about shops closing, make a concerted effort to use the ones that remain.

There are two other standalone butchers in Maynooth, both more traditional (one moreso than the other) than a Butchers Block franchise. I dislike the most-things-prepacked thing in Coynes but they stock some things that need to be ordered in Mulcahys.

There is also a fishmonger, a greengrocer and a specialist organics/specific dietary needs store; and in terms of non-food stores there's the bookshop, a gaming/record store, a jeweler and an electrical repair/appliance specialist. Plenty of towns a similar distance from Dublin and specifically from the large retail centres would have few or none of these. Quite common to only have convenience stores, supermarkets and chemists

Mulcahys are up for sale, so we might be left with Coynes as the only standalone butcher soon.
Maybe with the BB closing, it'll influence Mulcahy's decision to sell though.
