problem with front axle o tractor

I bought a tractor recently and there is a problem with the front axle

I contacted the salesman on Friday and they have offered to rebuild the axle by some company in carlow/ wicklow (I'm not sure which) that specializes in this type of work

My mechanic says I should get a new axle

The tractor is a Case CS94

I can't upload the photos but my friend will

From memory around 700 for the recasting and machining. they also made up the cap bearings for me at the time but that is over ten years ago. around 350 for the opposite side that was rebushed two years ago. it's the cap bearings that cause the problem with them. and they probably should be replaced every 3000 hours with a loader even when well greased

I was in the Volvo Construction Equipment company in Sweden where they make all the heavy earth movers.
They make all the gearbox and axle assemblies there. Spent a lot of time just standing there watching the castings being machined. All automated and parts handled with robots.

Surprisingly neither did the tractor dealer spot it and it was not spotted in the workshop either before it was send out. Last owner may have( much more that just may have) known about it and done a hide job on it.

I disagree that the money is not in the deal. This is why you pay 2-5K extra for a tractor to a dealer for his warranty. OP mentioned a salesman so I presume it is a larger type tractor dealership he is dealing with so OP will have paid a good premium for the tractor over a smaller dealership or a private sale..

I do not think I accept a rebuild job. Too many variable's. New/or good second hand axle or money back. TBH if its an issue with them I be looking for a new axle or money back. This creates an issue for the dealership as an owner will appear on the previous history taht is very short term

However for OP if he accepts a rebuild , how long will it take with Christmas he will be lucky to see the tractor repaired before mid February. Warranty will be nearly run out if 3 months or cut in half if 6 months. As well what warranty on new rebuild axle. I be unwilling to accept unless I got a 3 year warranty on rebuild axle and neither the rebuild company or the dealer will continence that.

New axle or money back IMO.

Hi patsy didn't see what was done left it to rynn in galway they're take on it was if the original casting was of good quality there's no issue with rebuilding a casting poor quality or impure castings seem to cause the problems with a repair not taking

What exactly did they do when they recast it?

Hi I've done both sides of an axle here both different methods one side was recast a good 8500 thousand hours ago other side was miled and bushed more recently as it's a common fault with them a good second hand will be very rare and a new replacement will be wild money I would expect as parts for the cs range were expensive but they are overall a very good tractor

It's a carrara axle as far as I know

They can weld casting. I think they preheat it first. I saw it done before where I worked but it didn't hold.
If it's part of a bore etc that takes a bearing or sleeve, then I don't think I'd trust it. Look for a new casting.

Its a bit hard make out what that is. To me it looks like around the kingpin but I can't be sure.

But if the casting is broken on the axle around there then it's a new axle job or money back for the tractor. Further back towards the centre axle could be plated but it's going to devalue the resale.

I'd be putting the pressure on the sales man,new axle money back for the tractor if it's still inside warranty.

ZF axle if I remember correctly. Looks bad that not the worst I’ve seen. Lower kingpin bearing collapsed and as a result has taken put bit of the casting too.
Short answer would be if you did find another axle at reasonable money would be way to go.
It can be repaired but would need a good job done , that broken out bit built up and repaired and most importantly to get the seat right again to take a new bearing.
I guess there’s a front loader on it, lack of grease kills a front axle, especially on loader work.
I’d say try the push them down the route of sourcing another s/h axle in lieu of repairing but I do believe one will be hard enough got. If they tell you so, you may have to opt for the repair.

Edit. I do see the loader in the first pic so I’d say that has accelerated the problem.
