Spent all monday calling (i think) most companies

Went with An Post insurance(Aviva) fro 431euro

Fully comp,glass,two drivers,keys,brakedown.

Paid in full as paying monthly was 60 euro more expensive :eek:

This year was the cheapest insurance ever for her:cool:

I was investigating car insurance for a older relative, who was flat refused a quote by 2 insurance companies since he is over 75, despite never having a claim, or a penalty point, has a full licence, and his car over 15 years old with less that 5k mileage per year has its NCT.

Why can you not insure yourself with a foreign insurance company? we get filleted for everything in this country.

I believe insurance for an 80 year old in the UK is about €200?

EVERY insurer in Ireland, with the exception of FBD, is a foreign company. The same insurers offering reasonable premiums elsewhere, have adjusted their rates here to reflect the claim conditions in this jurisdiction

You need to be a member of a club. You can join a club on a limited membership (5 day for example), and it can be quite cheap, but i'm not sure it would save you much money, unless your insurance premium is very high.

Last year I paid €547 to Axa, up from €575 the previous year.

This year I was quoted €652 for renewal with axa.

On its4women, I used code LQ456 plus online discount to get this price:

So I went for the €459, not bad.

Just so everyone knows AA insurance have a €200 discretion with your renewal quote. If you get a quote of say €755, when they ring you to follow up, you tell them you got a better quote of say €556 they can refer you to the loyality team and they can price match to the €556. But it needs to be within the €200 to get the referral.

I've asked in other places and only got stupidity in response. CBI released a report that shows motor insurers lost significant money over a 10 year period and this is somehow confirmation that they're "ripping off" customers?

I read that the insurance business had a ~9% profit last year. That's after the massive 62% increase of premium in recent years... In other words they had to increase the premium by 53% just to get even... How about starting to reduce the dept from previous years?

I hardly see where we are being ripped too...

My insurance has gone up by 700 and I get less.

Had motorcycle cover for anything and it was taken away.
Had fully comp with a huge amount covered on cars which was taken so now I pay €1780 for barely anything just basically legal to be on the road, no breakdown, windscreen or anything at all really...

Firstly, I have always stated here that premiums are far too high and the current levels are unsustainable. In addition, if things continue as they are, aspects of our day to day lives will change dramatically (sport, leisure, care etc)

It is very easy to slap out headlines like 'Rip Off' and 'Gouging' to feed the perfectly understandable dismay that people feel about the situation. It was reported that the figures say premiums rose by 42% in the last ten years and insurers made 9% profit last year. That seeks to suggest that insurers were making profit every year during the decade, which is far from the truth

Commentators were saying that 9% profit is out of line with the UK, which averages 5% profit. Let's put that in to context. The report says that the average premium is now €700. That means your insurer made €63 profit from you last year. So, if you were in the UK, your insurer there would have made €35 profit THAT YEAR. So, basically you were ripped off by €28.....

We all know how averages work and within those figures some sections of policyholder gave insurers hundreds of Euro profit each and some sections lost the same amount. Just like some insurers would have lost millions and some made a tidy sum. Profits one year are no guarantee of profit next year, even if they had the exact same clients on their books, it is a game of chance

The key to reducing premiums is to reduce claims and make Ireland a profitable environment for more insurers to come in and increase competition. If you are left with only one or two insurers offering cover in any given sector, you are exposing yourself to being shafted by those providers, just like any other supply and demand scenario. If insurers are making money, you will pay lower premiums. It has always been that way throughout history
