Welcome to the Waterford GAA discussion thread.

This is consistently the most active thread don the GAA forum. As a result, discussion can get quite heated. But there are certain things posters must realise are simply not OK to post:

- Personal abuse of anyone be they other posters, players, managers, referees, pundits etc. Any personal abuse will result in an infraction or a ban.

- Rumours about players'/managers'/anyone's personal lives. This should be self explanatory. Apart from being a dickish thing to do, it can lead to legal trouble for Boards.

- Trolling. Again, self explanatory. Trolls will be banned for a long time.

- Accusations of trolling. Report a post if you suspect it to be trolling. Do not call a troll out on thread as this will be considered back seat modding.

- Speculation into the identity of another poster. This is a site-bannable offence.

This list is not exhaustive. Either myself or another mod may add to this as we see fit. Just because a certain behaviour isn't listed, doesn't mean you can't be banned for it. The general Boards.ie rule of Don't be a Dick always applies.

If you feel a post breaks the rules, simply click this underneath the post in question to report the post and a mod will deal with it as they see fit.

So be civil to each other and happy posting.

Given that the thread regularly descending into tit for tat insults between posters, From now on, it won't be a card but a ban straight away for anything like this. The mod warning is clear in the first post but yet people still ignore it.
Also, I'd like to remind people of the ban on discussing players'/managers'/officials' private lives without any substance. You can be getting into libelous territory there. So a zero tolerance policy will be enforced as well.

The times should be the same every weekend, maybe 6:30 on a Saturday evening if teams have lights or earlier if they don’t or Sunday morning.

Groups of 6 would be ideal so 10 matches would be played between February and June. Play the semi-finals and final in July then. It’s surely common sense?

Imagine a club player having 10 guaranteed 10 matches like every other county???

Idea is sound. I've played in a similar structure outside Waterford and played roughly 25-30 competitive games in a season in one code - players absolutely love it. League groups were much bigger and operated without home and away. The Saturday night games start after the clocks change and they're great social occasions in the clubs. Supporters turn up and get in and around the club, players go for a couple of pints afterwards.

The issue I'd have is starting in February and the pause in April.

'April for Clubs' is a farce. County players are parachuted into teams last minute. Club players have to do two pre-seasons - one for the championship games in April and a second whenever championship starts again. The county teams the same. Flying after the league, asked to stop everything for a month and then go back into more pre-season type championship prep afterwards - absolute nonsense.

We'd be far better off with playing the intercounty games through April, and starting club leagues in March or April without those guys. Let the All Ireland finals take place at the end of July, and let the club championships start in July or August.

This would be fairer on all players, club and county, and give more defined seasons for both. Currently a huge proportion of county players are togging 12 months of the year and club players about 10. There's far too much running around cones under lights in slop and there's really no need for it.

I'm sure a more condensed season starting in spring might reduce costs for clubs also.

But also a motion to do away with them and replace existing all county leagues with Divisional Championships - I really don't understand the thinking there.

The same club wants minor to go back to U18 - I also don't understand the thinking there or how it could possibly work unless the intercounty competitions go the same way first.

Modeligo also have a poor motion in that they want a divisional hurling league but not football. Fair enough if Ballygunner bring that motion, but Modeligo were in the county intermediate final this year.

That's true buts that's up to Croke Park to change, the board ned to set competitions into whatever space they have for clubs

Turns out that the majority of counties don't play Championship games in April regardless - Waterford is one of the few who do.

We can organise our own competitions starting in March/April and Championship commencing in late summer regardless as every county bar 2 is finished up at the end of July in any event.

Many - if not most - other counties have been running well-organised multi-division leagues for decades. Is it beyond the County Board to do a survey of these other counties and come up with an appropriate structure for Waterford, rather than just making it up as they go along? Waterford is really in the dark ages in terms of providing bread-and-butter competitive games for its club players.

What exactly is this? I presume it covers all hurling and football club games for 2020?
The hurling season ticket for intercounty with all club hurling games included is only €200 so unless you're big into football, that €150 ticket is a rip off?

Shane Bennett has opted out of the panel 2020. It seems The 3 Bennetts were called for county training 2 nights after Ballysaggart Munster final loss, and while Stephen and Kieran went, Shane didn’t and has since told Cahill he dosent want to be involved.

That's disappointing and the second year he's opted out so I guess his heart isn't in it. Best of luck to him. Always gave 100% on the field for his county when he played.

I like the 8 team league suggestion. To be honest, it's harder for all teams to compete on a level playing field even moreso for the league so narrowing down the numbers in each league and increasing its competitiveness is a good idea and hopefully it's adopted.

As has been mentioned here at length, the league's need a revamp badly in Waterford.

The clubs and players are to blame for alot of it, getting matches called off for 21st birthdays, holidays, stag weekends , every excuse under the sun, look how long it took the senior football championship to finish, two teams held it up for weeks, couldn't make the draw for the next round, inter hurling lge final was never played, Waterford junior lge you get your fixtures you play them end of story

Agree with this, get your league fixtures in January and that’s it play them away

Disappointing hopefully if we are doing well he might reconsider.

Cant wait for the new season, could be a great season if Cahill reaches his potential as manager and the players buy into it

We don’t know his reasons but getting flogged like a knackers horse for 3 years under Derek McGrath in the very stage of his career where he should have been protected can’t have helped his desire for it. My genuine concern during the McGrath era was that development our best young forwards was being cast aside for a bastardised brand of hurling and looking at some of them now I don’t think we were wrong,

Would be the exact same as this year with small forwards getting blown away physically once the real hurling starts, that half forward would not win one puck out come championship, there's about 9 small light forwards on the panel and those types of players are almost redundant in the modern intercounty game, we'd be as well off I'd we dropped about 7 of them because though they're all good hurlers, they all offer the same thing,
Why don't we at least try a few big lads, Shane Ahearne, Cormac Curran, JP Lucey, etc, did any ofthem ever even get a chance?
