Hardwiring a dash cam?

Since the old thread is closed, Wondering would this work for Blackvue ? If you took of the cigarette lighter part of the end of this would you be able to use it to hard wire it to the fuse board of the car. (blackvue part costs £20 plus another £20 for postage) that part hard to find not on any websites only battery one.

The cigarette lighter reduces the output for all dash cams to 5V, if you remove it and hard wire to the fuse board you will fry the dash cam!

You can get kits which are plug and play with the fuse board and provides the correct voltage such as this, though you may not get one with a connection for the camera?

Hardwired my cameras using fuse board piggyback (ebay) and cig lighter sockets I got from breakers at no cost.

The casing, yes. You need to keep the power converter that's inside it.

This is the image of the cable i was talking about was £20 +20 P&P, if i striped the end of cig one & add them connections to the end i thought it would work must be a converter connection hidden in it there, probally see it if it was unwrapped

Good point. I just assumed it was USB powered so dropped to 5v, but this may not be the case.

What age is the car you are planning to hard wire? If its still in warranty you are giving the garage an easy get out on any electrical problems.

It is a 2018 car. But going to leave it cause the part is hard to get. (if the cam i had was next base it would have been easy to do.hardwire kit is in halfords).

It is a Blackvue I have & the normal cigarette lighter charger & i was going to hardwire it instead free up the lighter & i thought if i stripped the end of another lighter charger & adapt to the connections u normally use for hard wiring it to the fuse board it would work (The hardwire direct power cable blackue want 20e postage as well so that 40e for a cable not a hope)

so i am just sticking with the cigarette lighter option

This is exactly what I have done with my past 6 cars.

All you need is a piggy back fuse holder and find which fuse is live with ign on.

Then get a trailing lighter socket to wire on to it.

Cut the clips off this >> Cig socket and wire it to the piggy back fuse

Make sure to tape it up well when plugged in to ensure it doesn't slip out and disconnect, cable tie it on to something then to avoid rattles.

Youd want to check your warranty as it could be invalid with a fuse tap.

I would assume the warranty would only be invalidated should a fault occur which would be directly connected to the said fuse.

There was a thread up a month or 2 earlier, where that didn't even matter. A fundamental change was made. That's it really.

I have a Blackvue camera that I run off 12 volts from the dipping mirror supply. It's a few years old now - newer models might be different.

I saw that thread,
I have yet to have a dealer mention anything to me on any of my cars regarding warranty.

This I presume only works when the ignition is on, is that the vast majority of these ? I am wondering if anyone lets them record while parked up

There are ones that have a built in battery and motion sensors that start recording for a short length of time if the car gets shaken.
