The Late Late Show Tribute to Gay Byrne, Tuesday, RTÉ One, 9:35pm

Ryan Tubridy has promised that tonight's Late Late Show tribute to Gay Byrne will be "really special".

The veteran broadcaster passed away on Monday, November 4, after a long illness.

Tubridy saluted his "great friend" and "magnificent mentor" on his RTÉ Radio 1 programme on Tuesday morning ahead of tonight's show. He described the Late Late tribute programme as "a happy wake".

Speaking to The Today Show's Brenda Donohue ahead of the show, Tubridy said: "Gay was a once off, so tonight is a once off.

"It makes perfect sense that we gather the troops, gather the family, the friends and to say a final thank you. Tonight isn't going to be maudlin, or morose, or mawkish, it's going to be upbeat, it's going to be fun."

The 90-minute live special on RTÉ One at 9:35pm will feature contributions from Gay Byrne's friends and colleagues across the world of entertainment and beyond, including Bob Geldof, Andrea Corr, Pat Kenny, John Sheahan and Mary McAleese.

Also appearing will be President Michael D Higgins, Joe Duffy, Sharon Shannon, John Sheahan, Finbar Furey, Tommy Tiernan, Pat Shortt, Eamon Dunphy, Twink and Mary Black.

Yes, there would be family viewing, maybe a neighbour, friend or auntie in, and mother would serve a supper. There’d be comment, grunts of disapproval etc. nowadays that’s been replaced by ourselves fathered here.

The thing I remember as a kid watching the late late as an anxious enough child I would be scared listening to some of the news or stories but when Gay would talk about and rationalise it on his show I felt safe it sounds weird but it was part of my childhood.

I appreciate that he was so good at his craft and am glad he is so fondly remembered by many on boards too...

I Worked in a few rural and small town pubs through the early to mid 80s. The telly was always turned off after the 9.00 news and weather. Except for Saturday, and later, Friday nights. Sometimes it was Meh but a lot of the time the whole place would be glued to it and there would be people shusshing.

Mike Murphy is 78??? God almighty, I knew he was older than he looked but this is ridiculous. He's only 6 months younger than Michael D. Higgins.

I was about to suggest that he should take over the Late Late Show - but of course RTE would never dream of hurting the feelings of someone like Tubridy anyway, even though few people think he is doing a good job on the LLS anymore.

I honestly think Mike said fck live on air because Ryan had just made a crack about him being "the bold child". He knew full well Tubridy would panic when spontaneity was introduced into the proceedings.

I was going to go out for a few pints and watch this later, or probably never. I'm glad now that I didn't. It was a good enough show . There was always going to be a few luvvies but it was good to see a few old faces from the past. Nice bit of music. Duffy was Duffy. That's not going to change any time soon.

I liked the fast moving pace and to be fair Tubbs did a good job under pressure.

They celebrated a man who died yesterday and death was hardly mentioned at all.

RIP Gay.

MeToo the child who was learning to be anxious and made feel more secure by Gaybo’s philosophy and rationalization. I unconsciously adopted some of his sayings and to this day you’ll hear me say “I’m delira”, often to be in the receiving end of puzzled expressions of those who didn’t grow alongside the sound of Gay in the radio and telly.

I enjoyed that show It was effectively a very public wake and we sure do love a good wake. I must say with the death of Gaybo and Brendan Grace just a few months ago, I feel quite sad. A huge part of growing up in ‘80’s / ‘90’s Ireland is slipping away and we’re all just getting older. Time doesn’t wait

I was indeed struck by the indifference many of my younger (but not by much!) work colleagues had to this news. No clue who he was, this news hardly registers with a good proportion of people, although you’d hardly believe it if you were watching RTE news.

RIP Gaybo, a true Irish legend.
