Maybe I've mischaracterised your feelings about Kerr. Would strong dislike be more accurate? You have started multiple threads about the man, expressing a strong and - some would say - irrational dislike - so it can be hard to get the semantics absolutely right.
Brendan Bendar wrote: » Sorry, my friend, I have been very civil up to when I was subjected to abuse. I have no dislike for Mr Kerr as a person, it’s the professional realm I criticize, and criticize fairly. I fully accept some may like the product, but I don’t, and have said so, as I have repeated quite often. Putting forward the use of colloquialisms as proof of good punditry is, for me , a cop out, it’s a grab at a certain audience for whom that kind of presentation resonates with . It doesn’t with me, and I’m good with that.
Brendan Bendar wrote: » In my opinion that would be the death knell for RTEs soccer coverage. I have nothing personal against Mr Kerr, but to give him mic time especially in a co-com position,in my opinion, would be disasterous. I often wonder what this ‘quirky information’ is and how it enhances commentary. Houghton and Whelan are no great shakes either, having a less than smooth familiarisation with the English language. At least one could switch off panel discussions but as a co commentator the game would be unwatchable and unlistenable to. Will not be a runner, I feel.

Will someone tell Kerr to shut the f***k up.
He hasn’t shut his jaw since this Italy- England game has started.
Way too much input.
It’s literally what he’s there for!
No it’s not, what is the commentator there for?
To learn Italian.
Hasn't shut up since the game started.
Ruining the game.
He’s the co commentator, co commenting.
He has no influence on the game.
Turn the sound down if you’re so offended.
Switched the game off, couldn’t take that for 90mins
Cant understand why they let that guy co commentate.
Didn't know the great man was on tonight, turning it on now
Kerr: Face for radio and a voice for print
I'm a fan of Kerr, would much rather him than Ronnie Whelan or Stephen Kelly. Can't listen to either of them. Ronnie Whelan's voice and misery goes through my head and Stephen Kelly's voice isn't much better, Kelly also seems like he can barely get a sentence out of his mouth sometimes.
Theres a pro english bias with Kerr thats pìssing me off....
The boy is just not suited for co commentator….never shut up the whole first half.Melt your head.
Way way too gobby and intrusive…. Studio gives you some chance to enjoy a game.
I respect Kerr but he is too relentless as a co-commentator...keep him in the studio...
Yes, way too relentless, you are correct.
aaa
I’ve always felt a lot of the anti Kerr stuff is pure snobbery, because he has a working class Dublin accent and not a D4 type voice.
It's a proper working class Dublin accent though. I wouldn't be a fan of the modern interpretation of that at all, but Kerr has a way of speaking and using language that is extraordinary. I love when he's a pundit on Virgin or Newstalk. He has such a passion for soccer and, unlike lots of other pundits, knows the name, strengths, and weaknesses of every player, club or country he is providing commentary on.
I wish he'd do a podcast tbh. We might have reached "peak podcast" at this stage, but I'd love to hear Kerr chatting away with players, managers, journalists etc.
The best thing about proper national treasures is that they don't know they are national treasures.
This punditry lark. Talk about money for old rope. If I had one euro for every time I have heard a pundit say anything truly insightful about the game of football I would have zero euro.
We can enjoy this game, the ‘great man ‘’is in the studio.
Lets see how the current co com does.
Hmmm… not too promising so far.
