Kerr is an excellent pundit and commentator. He adores the game and aside from his existing knowledge he always puts in his homework. You'll hear him talk before a match for example about a winger playing for a lesser known team in Europe and how he is looking forward to seeing the link up play and the recent form of the player. Or if a similar team is winning say a low key Europa league game and a player comes off "We'll they do have a big derby match coming up back home next weekend so no surprise there".

Sorry, my friend, I have been very civil up to when I was subjected to abuse.

I have no dislike for Mr Kerr as a person, it’s the professional realm I criticize,and criticize fairly.

I fully accept some may like the product, but I don’t, and have said so, as I have repeated quite often.

Putting forward the use of colloquialisms as proof of good punditry is, for me , a cop out, it’s a grab at a certain audience for whom that kind of presentation resonates with .

It doesn’t with me, and I’m good with that.

I don't agree that you criticise Kerr fairly. You have suggested strongly - in fact you've stated explicitly - that you don't actually listen to him and switch him off whenever your hear his voice or his "whine", as you would put it. That leaves you ill equipped to critique his merits or otherwise and makes your somewhat arbitrary grievances against his capabilities in the "professional realm" appear flimsy and without any real foundation. Dyaknoworrimean?

His use of colloquialisms is far from the only aspect of Kerr's modus operandi that posters have mentioned in his defence in this thread, but if you want to persist - despite evidence to the contrary - that this is the only thing people enjoy about his commentary style, then, fair enough, I guess.

Although it would appear that to compliment your unwillingness to actually listen to Kerr, you've also developed an unwillingness to actually read through your own thread.

As I keep saying, as a person I’m sure he’s a fine man, it’s his presentation style I do not like.

As a co-commentator I think he is way too intrusive, annoying, way too gobby and whiney, and goes on far too long.

That’s my opinion, nothing against the man personally, but I prefer a more muted,more in synch co commentary where the c/com comes in in small inserts at minor breaks in play.

I feel over egging the colloquialisms is extremely annoying and much prefer some genuine reaction comments rather than coming out with

“Shourah giviner a good dunnth” kind of rubbish.

it's a bit of snobbery too, I'd say. Because he doesn't have an English or fake English accent like some, he gets stick.

He knows more about football than anyone else in this country, does his research on the teams playing, and uses his experience to give exceptional insight into what he's commenting on. Far better than stealing a living and coming out with dated platitudes and wishy washy non-comments, at the end of the day there.

So what if he has a strange turn of phrase. Snobbishness, as I've said.

I defended my position, whilst watching the rugby, great commentary from Hugh and Donal, in synch, calm, and your head isn’t melted at the end of it.

Hopefully on topic, heard a lad Paul Corry on RTE radio sports excerpt this am analyzing the Denmark game last night.

Came across as very concise,articulate,informed,and easy to listen to.

Think I heard he was x Shamrock Rovers.

Some broadcaster could do worse than to sign him up.

Might be a good change from what we have to put up with.

I'm a fan of Kerr, would much rather him than Ronnie Whelan or Stephen Kelly. Can't listen to either of them. Ronnie Whelan's voice and misery goes through my head and Stephen Kelly's voice isn't much better, Kelly also seems like he can barely get a sentence out of his mouth sometimes.

I’ve always felt a lot of the anti Kerr stuff is pure snobbery, because he has a working class Dublin accent and not a D4 type voice.

It's a proper working class Dublin accent though. I wouldn't be a fan of the modern interpretation of that at all, but Kerr has a way of speaking and using language that is extraordinary. I love when he's a pundit on Virgin or Newstalk. He has such a passion for soccer and, unlike lots of other pundits, knows the name, strengths, and weaknesses of every player, club or country he is providing commentary on.

I wish he'd do a podcast tbh. We might have reached "peak podcast" at this stage, but I'd love to hear Kerr chatting away with players, managers, journalists etc.

The best thing about proper national treasures is that they don't know they are national treasures.
