Then you're at odds with Netflix hiring practices because they do care what race their cast is and actively audition with discrimination to hire "BAME" aka "please no white people".

Funny how the very thing you link to conflicts with the point you were making.

The only casting call for The Witcher on that list was for the role of Ciri. It clearly says "Options Required". So it would appear that rather than "please no white people", they had already seen several "white people" for the role and they were just looking for alternatives. In the end, they cast Freya Allen; a white person.

Even if they did cast a BAME girl (never heard that term before but we'll go with it for now), I wouldn't care, so long as she can give an excellent performance. By putting out the casting call you linked to before, that clearly shows that that's what Netflix were most interested in too. Not just limiting themselves to actresses who look like the character, but ensuring they're hiring someone who can best portray the character. That's more important imo. If that means they find someone who suits the character best in both looks and acting, great. If they have to go with someone who doesn't look exactly like the character was described in the source material but who can best portray the character overall, great, because that's more important than their skin colour.

Because people bring their real world BS into things that are supposed to be fun.

Yep,wouldn't it be great if companies were creating fun things that weren't full of *current year* bull**** like diversity quotas and everything-is-about-Trump?

We're watching the entertainment industries having a nervous breakdown and expecting us to enjoy it. :o

So here's the challenge with casting by appearance (whether that's by race, hair colour, height, whatever physical characteristics).

First you need someone who looks like the character in question, which is already dramatically narrowing your field of candidates. Then you need to actually find them. Then you need to ensure they're a good actor who can bring something fresh to the role - so you're down to a very small field indeed, perhaps already out of luck. Then the actor needs to be available and willing for the production. They need to have decent chemistry with the rest of the cast. And then you'll probably need agreement between all the key players - casting director, director, producer and perhaps even funder.

Ultimately - assuming there's no commercial shenanigans afoot and there's a degree of creative freedom involved in the casting - the most important factor is whether they're a good actor. If you get someone who looks like the fictional character as described or shown in source material, great - there are some brilliant casting directors out there who'll do their best to get the absolute best candidate! If not, also great! Physical appearance is an incredibly restrictive casting barrier for all the reasons described above, and ultimately something pretty much everyone won't particularly care about if the performance is good enough.

Naturally, it would be naive to assume everyone is cast based on acting talent alone :) That's completely not the case in reality. And there are plenty of circumstances where some kind of physical attribute is essential for the character in question - a production about race relations, realistic or fantastical, will obviously have far less leeway. In The Witcher, you're naturally not going to be casting a 6'5" person as a dwarf unless you have a healthy CG and effects budget :p There are also cases where extra efforts should be made if the role calls for an underrepresented minority actor - that's why there was such a backlash to Scarlett Johannson's casting in Ghost in the Shell, as at the time there were few lead roles for Asian-American actors (especially when the film works itself in weird loops to explain why she's not Asian). But for the most part what's key is that a performance captures the spirit and essence of the character in question, and brings something fresh and unique to the role. Restricting your casting to lookalikes means you're far less likely to get that.

How will all this play out in the context of The Witcher? Who knows *shrugs*. Personally I think the trailer looks a bit underwhelming mid-budget fantasy to me, and I'm not super passionate about the source material. I believe Cavill is a pretty bland actor... although that could suit the characterisation of Geralt in much of The Witcher 3 :o

Frankly, I am really annoyed. I'm really into gothy-looking pale white girls and I thought this series would give me loads for my ****-bank but nooooo, they had to be all politically correct and hire a load of non-white actresses for the parts. It's very upsetting. And before people start at me, no, I'm not racist... my penis is.

I think that it doesnt help that female game characters, especially in the witcher, are designed to look like super models. See the abuse the Triss actress is getting for not looking like the game character.

Eva green would've been bloody perfect for Yen. Venomous acting attitude, tough and experienced with dark themes, fantasy and even full nudity. Could handle anything the Witcher series could throw at her.

If folk online put half as much time into understanding how their entertainment mediums of choice are actually produced, they'd be far less likely to buy into ridiculous stories like the one above due to their own pre-existing biases. :o

The casting other than Cavill is pretty atrocious but that's typical of Netflix. Won't be getting a sub from me. I've been enjoying the 1st game again.

As I have been gameless awhile and as I only played TW3 one time..... I am half tempted to start again with the first game. Not sure if this is a good or terrible decision though.

Problem is with me and replays, I always swear I am going to make different choices to see a different side of the game..... then when the choice comes I just can't do it :) The other choices always seem wrong to me. Ill will say "give alvin to triss this time" and then give him to Shani anyway. Or "romance triss this time" and I will stick with Yennefer.

One thing I might change though.... while I would never side against the scoia'tael and go with "the order"..... I might be able to convince myself to stay neutral. Has anyone done that? Is it worth doing or does it just mean you miss out on game content for both and get nothing instead?

Same here. It's why I don't invest in those story driven Walking Dead games, once I make the choice and experienced the game, I have no desire to choose differently on a replay.

I will replay TW3 though, but simply on a much higher difficulty. I feel that on the normal setting, a lot of the mechanics are not required (potions, food etc.)

After over a year of "I should probably focus more on college and the rest of my life", I came back to Witcher, having finished my college papers and theory work today. Witcher and a pizza was my way of celebrating (I'm cool, I swear :P). Anywho, after first going off to pick a few fights with some innocent wolves who were minding their own business in order to refresh my memory, I got the main game finish. Now I feel like I should celebrate that... I guess I'll have to play the DLCs tomorrow!

Also, this is an accurate representation of being going back after so long away:

Decided to get properly stuck into Blood and Wine last week, having previously only played it for about an hour when it was released. I’d no idea what was going on. No idea of the controls. Nothing.

No wonder. It came out over three years ago. I could have sworn it was only last year. I’m still doubting it. But then again, it’s kind of symptomatic of how I’m pissing time away.

Yup, having looked back over the thread, I posted that I was nearly finished in April of last year! I'd no clue about controls for ages as well, especially the signs. I was constantly going into the settings to check what was set as what. It even took me a while to figure out why I was still hanging around Skellige...

I started playing at the start of July as it was the TrueAchievements Playlist game for the month. Took me 3 months of solid play to finish the game and all DLC. On easy mode. And I skipped playing Gwent.. 166 hours logged.

I didn't think much of Gwent at all until i came across a mission to win a card. Took me a few goes but getting that card ignited my love for it. Backtracked to the starting area to collect as many cards as i could. Absolutely love it and have a lovely physical deck at home as well.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,281 ✭✭✭✭Potential-Monke

Gwent wasn't for me either, just couldn't get into it. I think it may have had something to do with an absolutely stunning game to be played instead of wasting my time on a digital card game...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,215 ✭✭✭✭Penn

i ABSOLUTELY LOVED gWENT (just realised I had caps lock on at this point). Seemed stupid at first, but once you started getting into it and building up a proper deck and strategy, it really started to become something to just do between missions, or "I'll stop playing in about 10 minutes, may as well play Gwent until I finish."

But I have to admit, there was one section in the middle of the game that I became so p*ssed off with the main story missions that Gwent (and the desire to meet new characters and go to new areas solely so I could play more Gwent and get new/unique cards) was pretty much the only thing that got me through that section. I quite possibly would have just given up the game altogether at that stage if not for Gwent.

Just remember it plays perfectly as a standalone (Id say for a big percentage people who bought it it was their first Witcher and most of them will rate it as one of the best games they've ever played).

I played and loved Witcher I, II and read the books and I had no clue what was going on by the time III rolled around, you're not supposed to know who the main female protagonist is or whats happening really so just go with it, explore and enjoy. The tutorial is loooong, stick with it.

And Witcher III is one of the best games ever made but the Blood and Wine expansion is so massive and unique that its up there aswell, best DLC ever, its Witcher IV :D

  • Registered Users Posts: 9,348 ✭✭✭nozzferrahhtoo

Well I just started playing it again too so this thread revived in a timely fashion. I powered through a 100% completist run of I and II in about 4 evenings each. It was insane, but I got everything done in both games entirely.

Just started III on Friday evening and already the color of the world is seeping into my dreams with that off goldish sunshine hue that the Sun casts over the witcher world. And already I have hit content I did not somehow get the first time around. Small side missions and events around the map. I have decided this time not to do any fast travel you see :)

Not much of a gamer usually time wise, only a few hours a week, so this is going to take an age to complete. Hopefully I will finish it before Cyberpunk comes out.

Hello, I'm sorry if this is not the correct place to ask this question but I'm new to Boards.

I'm want to pre-order the digital version of The Witcher 3 for Nintendo Switch so I can pre-load ahead of time. However, the game is not appearing anywhere for me in the eShop? Is anyone else having this issue? I'd rather not have to buy the physical card tomorrow when it releases.

    Thanks in advance! :)

Id defo go for the physical copy of this tbh, a digital copy will be massive, which is usually a bad thing for the switch. Unless you're swimming in SD cards..

Yeah I have a pretty big SD card (think its 128 or 256 gb) with a decent bit of space left so the space isn't a huge concern unless the large file size would effect load times or how the game runs? I'm trying to keep my Switch as a digital only device so I don't need to carry the cards and also the nearest shop that I can buy games isn't that near :(

No sign of it on the eShop for me yet anyway :/

I was waiting for digital too. But it's 28GB so I think I'll end up with physical.

Played the base game to completion on Xbox, then played the base game and all DLC to completion on PC.

God help me but I'm already getting twitchy and fairly sure I'm going to get in on Switch too. Might just wait for a sale.

I got it for a tenner with a trade in offer where I got 50 quid for some game during E3. :)

I've already finished it on PC, so I'm not in a rush anyways.

Had a look at the Digital Foundry comparison video, and I'm amazed at the job they did: it does blow out of the water this idea of some games being too sophisticated or complex for the Switch; as while the end result is comparable to the PC version running on Low Settings, Witcher 3 is arguably an edge case for graphical prowess to begin with; plenty of AAA, current gen games don't push the boat out half as much. Basically I still dream of games like the Arkham series or Deus Ex popping up :D

Got enough time-sinks on the Switch though so might wait 'til the price drops and I've got through my backlog first.

Gamestop haven't been paying their bills, I would imagine, as Witcher 3 (and Daemon X Machina before it) haven't been stocked on their release dates. Apparently customers were supposed to get an email mentioning a €10 refund for the inconvenience, and I would encourage gamers to think twice about pre-ordering Switch titles with Gamestop going forward.

When they're not sending Link's Awakening Special Editions to the wrong address, of course.

Staff didn't know about the lack of Witcher Switch until this morning, I was told, as part of their "dailies" email.

Hopefully Gamestop can pull out of this talespin they seem to have going on, but it's looking F'ng bad...
