Local radio = The history channel

Usually I dodge local radio like a diseased wasp. As Dylan Moran says

"Do you know why its local? Cos it's sh1te".

Anyway im on a bus today and Midlands 103 is on. Something about these radio stations putting on music that should be long forgotten and highlights that there has been little worth remembering musically since the early 200s.

Pop music has its place but god it's like remembering a bad haircut or forgettable tattoo that sounded like a good idea at the time.

Right to be forgotten 101 this is.

Old people need their death notices! On a side note though, most of that 80s music is class, so much better than today's one hit wonders.

Ocean only gets airings in the car though, as some of the National Stations are no longer much better.

To be honest, before Newstalk came on the scene I found the “regional” stations to be far superior to the more Dublin/national stations.

CKR (now KFM), Eastcoast Radio and LMFM all had great weekend “shows” and you could be sure to hear some decent tunes during the week too.

I had high hopes of Q102 and then Radio Nova to really corner the “market” but they were both massive disappointments.

Where these stations fall down is when they try to “ape” the Dublin/National stations’ morning shows. Forced fun with idiot presenters. Dreadful stuff.

Haven’t listened to any of them in a few years at this stage so can’t comment on their “standard” today.

I LOVE that song. Absolutely love it! I wouldn't even attempt to try and count the amount of times I participated in a horrible drunken off tune singalong of it with my friends.

Football as well to be fair. Have enjoyed some fairly rabid local commentaries down the years when unable to make games.

Most local stations only have a few slots a week with county and western. I generally find they play a good mix of music and I just prefer the local orientation of everything etc particularly news and talk shows I like to hear local issues etc. It’s easy to get national news on the news in the evening etc. They also have much more detailed traffic reports and cover local sport.

Many local stations don’t do death notices though one I listen to does and I don’t see the issue it’s helpful to hear who has died Incase it’s a funeral you should attend.

It did :-) Why do you think we now have Sunshine, Nova and Q102? The people who listened/worked as kids in the original stations in the 1980s grew up and started their own version of their favorite childhood station.

They're about to take LyricFM away from me, the only good thing that ever came out of RTE. If they go down you might aswell delete radio with all stations.

I didn't have you down as a fan of Marty in the Morning, Emmet.

I was a keen Marty man, but since the imperious Bryan 'Dobbo' Dobson joined Morning Ireland I've gone back to serious 'current affairs' as I drive to work.

There's a lot of criticism of RTÉ out there, but they do damn good radio.
