At some point in your life have you ever felt like you were getting away with murder with the amount of money you were earning for your work. It's not that often that this happens, but I'd like to hear about any time it did.

I remember when I used to be an intern with the EPA a few years ago, I was paid the equivalent of about €10 an hour. They had no real work for me so they would give me these tasks that didn't make any sense. It was a bit annoying but of all the problems you can have, that's not a bad one. I remember one day I even took a nap in an empty office. It kind of felt unusual to think that some private sector worker was slaving away for pennies so that the government could pay for me to be there!

I remember every now and then my boss would give me a giant folder with various documents in it and say "have a look through this"! I'd take it away and look at just one random page, and then read a bit and make a note of something. I did this so that on the rare occasion when she'd ask me about what she'd have given me, I'd refer to that random page and say "after having a good look through it all I found this part particularly interesting". She'd then usually agree with me and treat me as if I was smart having pointed such a thing out.

She basically abandoned me with no real work to do for the first month. She was on holidays for the second half of my first month's probation and during that time she got somebody else to "sit on me" as she put it. I didn't get along with that guy too well! When she came back from holidays I had my month's probation meeting with her and I got the impression that the guy she left in charge of me wanted her to fire me. Well if that were true, then I definitely managed to convince her not to. I don't think she would've had it in her to fire me. She was too nice. But I must say we got on very well after that for the rest of my internship.

There was the time I was given the company credit card and told to take a colleague, who had over indulged at a christmas lunch, to the pub across the road and under no circumstances allow him to return to the office...

Conversely, I have had a nap in an empty meeting room but only because it was a go live weekend and we'd been on call for 24 hours...

That's what I thought at the time. I took it for granted that I'd no stress in my life at the time. But I'd kill for it now!

The other day this girl said "I always know when it's you in here because the radio will be on". She then went on to say "ah well, what harm". It's kind of ironic the way she said that. I suppose what she really meant was "you're a bit backward with your radio

Back in the 1980's, there was quite a bit overtime in my (relatively easy) job.

I could do the overtime out of the office, so I used to sit on the back of the bus with a load of registration forms, and write up the details on cards. Bloody computers ruined all that.

Also got a few days' Sunday overtime when I was in the building all on my own, putting thousands of pieces of paper in alpha and numerical order. Double time. Again the bloody computers put pay to such therapeutic activity.

Gosh, things have changed so much for me since then!

I know I'm one of the few here who's willing to admit they've an easy job, but I'm glad t say that the new job I'm in now, in security, is easy! It's been a long while since I've had an easy job.
