I'm sure this has been done before, but..... I hate Christmas. There is endless pressure to juggle so may things and facilitate so many other people.

There was a couple of times where I managed to end up alone on xmas day and I absolutely loved it

Not particularly looking for judgement about what a selfish person I am(though feel free) but more interested to hear others' opinions. Is this common?

I wouldn’t think of you as selfish for hating Christmas, the endless pressure and all the rest of it. I think your attitude towards Christmas is probably becoming more common though as people are becoming more relaxed with the idea of saying they hate Christmas.

I don’t hate Christmas, love it, just don’t like the way it’s become such a profitable commercial venture.

The original ethos of Christmas went out the door a long time ago. I'm not even talking about the christian aspect, now the feeling of togetherness is gone.

I dislike it. I have my reasons. You're not selfish for hating it. Do what you feel best doing during the Christmas period.

Most people are going to be pretty fed up by the time St. Stephens day rocks around anyways.

I understand if people arent holy or religious but I love it for the lights and getting family together.... Isn't it nice where most shops and businesses shut up for the few days.....
We all work way too much and should honestly be doing less.

Working 5 days or more is honestly ridiculous in this day and age with so much automation and so on....

We should be looking after one another better and be in a better place and happier in life.

Work takes over way too much.

I love the time off work, lovely foods, lots of drink, nights out, lights everywhere cheesy movies. Must be great if Santa still visits.

I just wish it didn't all kick off until December as I'm a bit jaded by it all at that stage.

I would have been with you on this but the shops now are barely closing 36 hours for Christmas with some starting their sales at 9am St Stephens morning. Those staff don’t get finished until nearly 8/9pm Christmas Eve & are back in 6/7am St Stephens morning.

One huge advantage of living in so remote and isolated a place ( small offshore island>) and being almost housebound is that I get to choose what I do and see,
Last year I was still just able for out and had a delightful Christmas dinner with the Westport Lunch Club and got my few bits in, then retreated home .

As a Christian, it is meaningful but in an appropriate and quiet way. This year I will not be to the mainland so will be tranquil. So will see none of the horrible hype. Carols from Kings on Christmas Eve starts it all for me.

It has become sickeningly commercial. Ads for months in advance for stuff you don’t need, and then sales at 6am on Stephens Day. It’s all about worshipping the religion of commerce.

I'd piss you off OP - I love Christmas more than I can express.

Yeah I hate the insane consumerism like Black Friday, but Christmas films, Christmas parties seeing people you haven't seen for ages, Christmas dinner, the magic for small kids. It's just heaven!

That said, I'm lucky - I know it's a difficult time for many. I actually like a few hours to myself Christmas Eve and Christmas Day too.

Shouldn't be any promotions for it until after Halloween though. Part of the magic is the wait.

I was the only member of the Monk family at home last Xmas and it was great. I abhore Xmas because of the consumerist nightmare it has become but I loved having a few quiet days off work. And the weather was warm last Xmas which was unusual.

I love the tacky lights, the tacky decorations, the squabbles, the food, the atmosphere, the family togetherness, the repeats of OFAH, the movies, the endless supply of treats, the nieces and nephews getting hyped to all get out on sugar and expectation, the granny snoring in the armchair. I love the lot.

I completely understand not everyone loving it though, I've had a few I would have happily skipped in hindsight. Overall though, it's a positive and relaxed period that I look forward to, especially from the end of Hallowe'en onwards.

To answer the OP, we are doing a super low-key Christmas this year. Family is spread across different parts of the globe, so, those of us who can, are travelling to a hotel between our locations, and having a zero stress Christmas.

For the first time in a few years, I actually can’t wait. I was so stressed about the anticipation of Christmas in the last few years.

We can do our own thing. Nothing needs to be cooked, and just a really nice time catching with the people I love best without worrying about the turkey being undercooked.

Don’t worry - it’s fairly common to dread a Christmas. Pressure!!!

I loved Christmas as a child, My parents were not at all well off but all 3 of us got exactly what we asked for each year without fail. My mam even had to work 3 jobs before Christmas for a few years. I didn't like it as a teenager because of some unfortunate changes within my family life. As a young adult I hated it. I felt very depressed any lonely this time of year even though I was surrounded by friends back from college or just home for the Christmas etc but the day itself I spent alone for 2 years.

Now that its coming to my daughters third Christmas, I am getting more excited for it every year

I just love seeing how excited she gets about Santa. Im looking forward to seeing the friends I might only ever see around Christmas. Im looking forward to having a week off over Christmas. The past 5 years I've worked every day except Christmas day itself over the holidays.

One of the worst things bout Christmas is when feckers start talking about 4 months before it happens!

It's not uncommon op, nor is it selfish of you. I find all that new year bolloxology even worse. There was a time I would go through the motions just to fit in. I'm old and wise enough now not to give a fck what people think of me anymore. I usually go away for the xmas/new year season. Vegas is an excellent place to get away from it all if you can afford it.

That is such a lovely idea! Hope it works out well for you all.

My mam is always saying she'd love for us all to just save our gift money and Christmas food money and use it to spend Christmas in a hotel in some nice snowy country. We'll hopefully get around to it some year soon!

There it is. I hate NYE. I always feel a mild melancholy at the end of the year, the last thing I want to do is celebrate another year over or beginning. I just feel extra aware of the passage of time and what that means in terms of life, loss and all that other serious stuff. Even Auld Lang Syne is about a sad farewell.
