Hi there , Apologies if this is the wrong thread.

Just looking at the option of renting out my car through a fleet app . Its called peer to peer renting. Anyone have experience or opinions on this . It seems like a good way to make some extra money.

It sounds like a massive headache and leaving you open to theft, damage, speeding tickets, insurance claims.. you'll lose money, I guarantee you!

Just to be clear, I’m giving my opinion and not my experience. But off peak car rates are as little as €100/week. That would barely cover the finance. Then you’ve the unknown as to what kind of driver is in your car, will they ride the clutch, crunch the gears, hard on the brakes etc.

Risky I'd imagine, and I'd really wonder about the long term extra costs that would be created from extra use, and would it really balance out. I've never heard of it being done, so I suspect it's probably not worth it, but who knows

Yea.. doubt there's much of a market seeing as the car rental companies don't charge a whole lot outside peak periods, and they have fairly new cars and are ruthless in collecting fees for damage.

You could get someone like me renting it and taking it to the redline , thrashing it around hard corners , double clutching it .

Not worth the hassle.

I've been a customer of Turo and it is fantastic. I wouldn't drive my own car the way I drove the Turo cars, I'll put it that way.

If it's some exotic machine or high end I could see there may be a small market but an ordinary poverty spec Irish car isn't going to bring in money....

Suppose it's somewhat like Airbnb but it's more widely used in the USA in the renting out of really cool motors.

I installed the app some time back out of curiosity, but unsurprisingly there weren't very many cars on it.

before you even go there, how are you going to insure it ?? Forget SD&P cover from the usual sources...........

Apparently this works for some people. I would fear damage to clutch/gearbox or someone swapping tyres/engine/who knows.

Just as a side note on this. I happened to be looking at my insurance policy (Zurich)for something else today, and it actually has a note to say I'm covered for car sharing schemes - so long as I'm not financially gaining from it.

I'll have to give it another check over, but thought it was interesting nonetheless.

Don't think that means allowing you to loan the car to someone, just legalise to cover you for getting petrol money off of passengers.

This will be the same as AirBnB and the tax will be at your marginal rate. So to make €30 from renting your car most people would have to charge €60 and no one is going to rent a private car for €60 a day when they can hire from a legit company for way less.

I got a car from Enterprise for €30(€55 with full insurance) for 4 days last year, was supposed to be a Focus size got an Mazda CX3. Unless it's fancy no one will pay and if it's fancy you'd be mad to rent it.

Just did a fast check for car hire for 4 days Cheapest was €38.50 four days hire for a Polo. Not a very exciting car but you would wonder how this can pay. And this was with insurance and collision damage waiver.

I believe its popular in the US for people with campervans/RVs. Boats too.

Hard to see cars taking off here though, not with our insurance costs.

This kind of scheme is a minefield when it comes to insurance. It goes without saying (but I'll say it anyway) that your own insurance will not cover this activity.

And regardless of what those schemes say about insurance, ultimately the owner is liable for a claim. If you're injured in a crash and go to law, your solicitor will name the driver and the owner as defendants. If a disqualified person slips through the net, gets your car and knocks someone down, the company supposedly covering him will repdiate cover and the claim will end up on your doorstep as the owner. The MIBI may pay out but they will come after you because you allowed your car to be driven by an uninsured driver.

You also have the issue of M50 tolls and speeding tickets. Definitely not for me.

Fleet have been doing this for a number of years and they're partnered with Axa, I'd expect them to have the insurance side of things fairly well sorted. Users driving the sh!t out of your car would be of greater concern. Those car rental prices quoted above seem very cheap - even renting a GoCar is €10 an hour / €60 a day.

I think it's a great idea.
I wouldn't be sticking a precious car up on Fleet app but if I had a taxed and tested older car that I wasn't using, I'd give it a go.
I know there is an age limit on the cars too - 2004 or so.
It could be a very useful service in rural Ireland where if you needed a car at short notice, you could get one maybe on your door step - if it becomes abit more popular.

Anyone have any updated on Fleet...seems it would be more attractive now that standard car hire has gone so expensive.

It doesn't seem to be gaining traction but I still think it's a great idea.

I know someone who paid 4k for 2 weeks recently for an auto Suzuki worth about 12k.

Im going away for 6 months and I was going to put my car into storage but Fleet seems like a good alternative...a friend could manage it for me.

As they say, the fastest car in the world is a rental car. Good luck renting out your car to any number of people who won't give two **** about it.
