Why is Ireland so fond of drink?

actually don't think that's bad as I'm a heavy drinker myself but I wonder, where does it come from? We're in the top 10 countries in the world.

Is it cultural or simply a lot of disposable income coupled with ****ty weather.

In many areas theres nothing else to do as a social outlet. Where I live has 4 shops and 6 pubs. I also think that theres still a huge stigma around admitting that alcohol is a problem for a person, it needs to be accepted as a disease like the great strides weve made around depression etc.
Please note I love a social drink and have no problem with drinkers or drinking

Not nonsense for many people. Some people prefer other drugs to alcohol...and alcohol is in fact a drug so you do “touch drugs”

Are people in early 20s drinking as much? I work with a few in this age bracket and they occasionally drink, but seem to spend more of their income on nice clothes /gym /coffees etc Definitely more mature than I was at that age, where we went out most Thursday /Friday /Saturdays.

Just wondering is that the trend across the nation?

Seriously? Would life be as enjoyable without alcohol? That's some brainwashing going on if you genuinely believe that. It is, however, only a strand of our culture but it is unique as the one which is, bizarrely, romanticised and used to stereotype us all.

I've no problem with people getting hammered out of their skulls. It's none of my business. Just let them do it in the privacy of their own homes, where they cannot threaten innocent people with their drink driving, or by sending in abused children and spouses into schools and emergency accommodation and mental health supports across Ireland, or clog up our hospitals or anything else. Let them knock themselves out in the comfort of their single lives in their own homes. Booze is the most dangerous drug out there. For people to drink yet look down upon people who smoke weed or take a pill here and there is preposterous. I know they're illegal but so are many things yet people do it anyway.

The weather and zero facilities. If you live in a rural area the nearest cinema/swimming pool/anything is 35+ miles away. Outdoor activities are hampered by the weather. However there is always a pub within 1-2 miles.

I have to agree with you on that. I bought into the "alcohol is bad" propaganda as a teenager from my parents and always stayed in, never went into parties and thus no friends cause my classmates all drank.

When I turned 18, I used my age card and tried what alcohol was about and was shocked. "This is what I've been missing!?" . Been drinking ever since (albeit moderately) and taking benzos.

I look back and realize that although my bank account has taken a hit moreso if I never drank as much, I wasn't ever really happy in my sober teenage years compared to my adult years.

As someone said, sure you can be totally sober and outlive your drinking buddies but what kind of life is that? For some, they wouldn't think twice about it but for me...nah

Marijuana is legal in many places now, such as Canada where I live. I can literally walk into a pot shop and buy as much as I want legally. So does that mean it’s no longer a drug just because it’s legal?

Also alcohol is illegal in many places around the world such as Saudi Arabia for instance where it’s seen as just another drug, which is is really.

I find it funny too. Most people are fine with drinking but alcohol is a substance which is directly implicated in the deaths of two Irish citizens every single day. Yet many of us wouldnt touch an E tablet because weve heard of some poor youngster who dropped dead at a concert a few years ago after taking one . Now imagine trying to convince soomebody to start taking some recreational drug that they knew killed two to three people in ireland daily and kills 2.8 million people each year around the world!

How easy is it to die from a standard therapeutic does of paracetamol(1.2g)
No matter the drug if it's well researched it will have a safe dosage in grams per KG of body weight. It's very rare for any issues to arise from someone taking a dose within the guidelines.

I've certainly been fond of a few sociables. Not so much these days, binned it off a while back to get a bit fitter and tidy up diet and haven't had interest since.

No, it is very, very hard to kill yourself with drugs. As a suicide method, it fails far, far more than it succeeds and that’s with chugging a lot of pills. Legal or illegal, dying by drugs is rare.

It’s also hard to kill oneself with alcohol in one session. It’s possible but rare. Both alcohol and drugs can cause chronic problems with habitual use. Taking a few yokes in college is not going to constitute habitual use though and the few deaths from illegals are publicised exactly because they are rare. Alcohol is likely to be the leading drug for causing chronic health problems.

Loads, usually a badly made batch of poitin/moonshine, same as most people who die from drugs die from a dodgy mix...... Another reason lab quality drugs should be readily available...... How many people died from 100% cocaine? Or a joint that wasn't laced with something else?
