Internet Porn and Minors!

Why is the Taoiseach waiting to see how the UK's age verification check 'fairs' out before introducing such laws here!? It seems like a no brainer to me and if anything a great start.

Its very nuanced, for example, 30 or 40 years ago it was common to see parents smoking around children or to see children being given a slap in public and no one thought anything of it. Any parent who smoked arond children or who slaps them in public today would be shamed or judged and this is enough of a deterrent so that for some parents smoking around children or slaping them in public is rare, of course, there are parents who do the right thing because it is the right thing to do.

It would be nice to think that people do the right thing for the right reason but sometimes they do the right thing because they are nudged into it or becaue they will be judged for it.

Banning smartphone for children will not work but a little bit judging of parents could change the culture so that eventually it would be rare for parents to give children unmonitored access to smartphones.

How hard do you think it would be? What percentage of teenagers do you think would know how to bypass filters using a VPN or an alternative browser like TOR?

Teenagers will always find a way around things thats why technology is not the answer its has to become the culture that children are not given access to smartphones and if they are, they are heavily monitored they might get around the monitoring but at the very least its a signal of what is expected form them.

The bulk of teen internet usage is now on phones & tablet, spend time with teenagers, most know the main sites, facebook, youtube etc., some will know what putlocker is, even some will know how to download torrents, but the majority aren't that clued up on vpn's and certainly not on the likes of TOR. again I'll use tax & insurance on cars, it's easy enough to go on facebook, look up "gardai checkpoints", and plan your journey accordingly, and through that some savvy individuals can drive around untaxed & uninsured indefinitely, does that mean we should all do it?

I'm not, you greatly overestimate the knowledge of how the internet works that kids have, it's like saying everyone who drives a car knows the ins and outs of an internal combustion engine. Kids are causal users, they know snapchat, facebook & whatsapp like the back of their hand yes, but you're confusing ease of use with in depth knowledge.

If I needed a car to go to where I was getting my end away, you'd be damned sure I'd learn in double quick time, or ask someone who knew already. Look at the Irish IPs who locked out torrent sites at the behest of government and other bodies who as usual were clueless about how this stuff works(mostly because they were unqualified and old). And yet Irish people are still downloading torrents. A goodly proportion of the threads in the TV forum hereabouts couldn't exist without illegal downloads, unless the folks over there are all Americans with subs to US Netflix, Hula and Amazon.

I'm generally the last person to be calling for bans of things/asking for more government regulation/interference in our private lives, however with regards to smartphones+social media I genuinely wouldn't mind if they were completely outlawed for minors, U16 at least - regular phones are all they need/should need at that age.
The rise of smartphones and social media's influence is starting to take effect much earlier and I have no doubt it is linked with the growing narcissism and anxiety we're seeing a lot more of in young people. Apart from maps, I can't see any marginal benefits that smartphones have over standard mobiles for children - it's the extras such as internet access, live videochatting etc which are causing most of the problems.

Again banning it or the idea of a porn passport won't work its much more subtle than that.

Its like underage drinking most teenagers drink underage but society still signals that the legal age of drinking is 18 because for some people alcohol is addictive.

No matter how much of an idiot you are you can do it. Once one kid figures it out it will spread across the country by word of mouth within weeks if not days.

I'm not in the we shouldn't do anything because one thing doesn't work camp, I don't think many are, but this thing just doesn't work.

As I've already said, it's very easy to look up gardai checkpoints and use that to drive around with no tax & insurance, so should we all cancel our policies? and just because their system doesn't work, why would we copy something from a country that though Brexit was a good idea anway? Are we that Dependent on the UK to show us how to wipe our arses?

The motivation is the key. I watched internet porn in the dial up days as a young lad, dial up was a far more effective barrier than any block the UK state could come up with.

There are more factors than just that. Torrenting as a medium is dying as people are looking for more convenient methods even where there is no ban. In some areas usage has gone down due to the site owners being tracked down and arrested. That wouldn't be happening with a porn ban for under 18s.
