The Mega Mk7 Golf GTI/GTD/R thread

Any body with either of these able to advise on what the real world economy is of these?
There is not much between them in purchase price.
The gtd 625 euro more.
I do 25000km a year and really would prefer the gti but my head tells me the gtd is what I should be looking at.
I've only driven the gti and found it very entertaining.
Dealer says resale is the same for both of them. There is only 90 euro difference in road tax and insurance the same so fuel costs are the main financial difference.

I keep getting an Android Auto hast stopped working pop up on my phone even when your not near the car. Tried reinstalling the app still happens.

As mentioned the cables are temperamental. I also struggle with getting much functionality out of an android phone on the vw, iPhones seem to work 10x better for some reason. I can’t even get google maps to work on Android auto

My android works perfectly with it besides the pop up on the phone, no problems with maps or anything like that. Have decent cables though.

Tried a different cable this morning and it worked first try. Didn't think to try the cable, now I feel stupid. Usually when something isn't working right I try a new cable.

It was a brand new cable used solely for the car, I didn't want to be pulling at the USB in the car everyday, go figure the cable is a dud!

And if the cable doesn't work get a needle to poke and clean out the charging port on your phone. If a cable doesn't sit snugly in your phone it's usually dirt.

The blue one seems to be on the low end of pricing. I wonder would you get a fair trade-in with that in mind, but if it's sitting there a year surely they want to shift it?

I don't understand the interest in these. The ones in McCoys sell in the blink of an eye. They've a steady flow of them and they don't last too long. At the same time the blue one is sitting a year and is the lowest price I've seen and the one in Brady's was sitting 6 months and at the time was the cheapest/lowest mileage.

If I wasn't holding off til next year I think the blue one would have been the one. €1,000 cheaper, keyless and ACC. No brainer really.

The APR on it must be very high. McCoys had a manual 181 GTI PP for sale a few months ago. It was a good price and had everything you'd want on it to be fair but the APR on finance for it was 6.9% which is just way too high. It might be the same on the blue Cupra.

That’s probably a factor for sure. I casually enquired about that GTI but the numbers were absolutely crazy! It would have been cheaper to spec a new one from a VW dealers. Sure enough I noticed they dropped the price on it a few K in subsequent weeks and it seems to be gone now.

In my case with my trade-in, it worked out at about €400 p/m which isn't bad for that level of spec but I'm not going to go paying 6.9% interest on it when as you say, you can spec a new one from 1.9%.

There was 3.9% being offered for it when I priced it cracking car but I thought it was over priced there was 0% on a new one at the time and the monthlies were only slightly higher.

Seat offer 2.9% on used ones at the moment. Figures are alright on the Cupra, minimum value is in line with a 1.5 Golf in the same price range so overall it's decent monthlies.

just on a side - I see the last run out of mark 7.5 in highline trim now get Vienna leather as standard ( when the mark 7 was run out Vienna leather and 18's were on the highlines)

Just to add my 2 cent on Cupra second hand prices. I keep an eye on them all the time as it's still my primary candidate when I will change next year.
What I noticed, that second hand ones are over inflated in price tags. My guess is, dealers price them on new sticker price vs what they costed back then. Keep in mind new emissions regulations bumped up Cupra price from 36k to 40k
I find it crazy that 161 and 162 ones going as strong as 27-28k!! Even with added extras those were about 40k back then. 3 year old ones should be near 20k not 30k price tag.
I noticed that blue one on donedeal for 32k too. It always stayed that price. What I found interesting is that it's mileage is consistently going up too. Is it's clearly a car that dealership uses as a joint that goes around. Not sure I would want to even touch it at this point.

I actually recently took the plunge on one of the ST 191 4drives in Mccoy's Motors. For what its worth they are a cracking car and deceptively quick. And Im saying that when my weekend car is an Evo8 FQ320.

I was very particular in what I was after (the missus needs an automatic) and like yourselves had been watching them for quite a while on the various websites.

It's funny to see others looking at the exact same models as I was. There was also a private one for sale that I spotted and then also the red one in Galway that's been there for a while now.

It'll be interesting to see what this one is like when they finally get some pics up

With respect to my experience, I had popped into McCoys a while back to ask about them and the lad in there, Peter, kept me in the loop about the first one coming in. He sent me pics on the Friday it arrived and I came in on Saturday morning to see it. I literally put a deposit down there and then. There were two other people coming in to view it that day with one lad from Limerick coming down as well so it's crazy demand for them. The other blue one they have is coming in this month and no doubt itll be sold in a heartbeat.

I traded in a boring Qashqai for it and the figures for me worked out in terms of doing a PCP deal.

It's odd, the main reason they are flying out the door at McCoy's is that themselves and airside seem to be the only dealers selling the Cupra brand. I'm based in Tipp and we have two dealers locally, Pierse in Tipp town and James Barry in Limerick, both used to deal in the Cupra brand but I've not seen one on either's forecort for months now.

It seems my replacement USB cable isn't working with Android Auto. I'll buy an Anker one off Amazon, if that doesn't work then I don't know what else. USB port in the phone is clean, I'll double check the one in the car. Cable currently used worked without issue in the rental. Such a pain.

For anyone interested there is a 142 Cupra 280 for sale on backroads.ie for €16,750. The only catch is there is 154,000 kms on it. Not a deal breaker for many but you'd want to be holding onto it a few years to get any value from it.

Still have to wait until early next year. My car only few days ago became 2 year old, so hopefully Jan/Feb I will be on proper hunt.

If there will be 171++ for around 28k before that, then I might pull the trigger.

I think the AWD ST is the one to get of the Cupra models. 300bhp+ is quite a lot to put through two front wheels.

It is but some cars can handle it more than adequately. The Clubsport S and current Civic Type R are two that come to mind.

Picked up the new golf yesterday after a long wait, not a gti or gtd unfortunately but was a nice surprise to see they’ve upgraded highlines with leather and keyless entry free of charge ( apparently due to long delays)

It's about a 3-5k discount on a similar 2018 GTI. I'm not sure that would be enough of a discount to make me want to deal with having to disclose that to my insurance company and potential issues.

Its a €50k+ car new with the spec it has. I can't imagine a Cat S would give you any issues with insurance, i'm sure there are thousands of cars like this on the road here that we don't even know about as they are not recorded.

Agree it wouldn’t put me off, but would need a proper inspection, receipts for the work etc.
Disagree that it’s well priced, considering it’s selling on behalf of a client, so it’s actually a highish private sale price in reality.

Just to be a pedant, having owned a Gti - saying “serious car” in the ad stinks of ‘I’m selling this for a mate, but I’ve driven the wheels off it and it’s deadly’
