Waterford acid attack

Just seen on rte 3 teens injured in acid attack last Thursday, one young lad u17 irish soccer player face looked bad and another lad on news at talking about it, think 4 arrested over it, apologies if there is a thread already.

If we don't invest in prison space, the judges will continue with soft sentences.
I'd be happy to pay taxes for more prison space if it meant taking dangerous people off the streets.

Agreed 100%, it just never seems to be high up on the agenda of the day, I guess it’s one of those things, nothing like that ever happened to me so I don’t really care until it actually does and you see the **** walk away with a smile and a suspended sentence

Alot of the political elite(the upper class) don't experience crime like the average person, they are so far removed from reality. Tax cuts only benefit the rich as they don't experience crime on the same level like the rest of us plebs.

I find it remarkable that people even think they should be let out of prison.

It's easy to shoot someone. It isn't easy to throw acid and disfigure someone for life. If you are capable of doing the latter, you should never see daylight again. Solitary confinement for life so they can't harm others. Anything else is nonsensical imo.

I don’t know is it not drill now as a successor to the grime? ..you know looking at these teens hiding their identities whilst muttering explicit threats reminds me the Al Quaeda terrorist music videos; such as Dirty Kuffar and it appears just so alien to us here in old Ireland.....

I mean it’s not the Frank & Walters. Far from it and I’m surprised it’s permitted under the category of music as that’s clearly not their motivation but we can see amidst our own plenty of Afro-Irish spilling out of the woodwork in imitating this movement... with one of the more prolific groups rather chillingly under the guise of New Eire but t’s startling; really and it’s hard to come to terms with.

In the Uk the majority of young offenders are guys who have already served a prison sentence. The public health approach has been shown to be the best way at preventing crime, not incarceration.

Now, that doesn't mean that there shouldn't be prison sentences in some cases. An acid attack like this warrants it. But in general we do less to prevent crime than we do to punish offenders after the fact. We need to do both.

I completely agree this is a horrific life changing attack.

But what was the motive behind it.
I'd be very surprised if it was a random attack.

Are they in a gang, involved in drugs, owed someone money for drugs,
involved in anti-social behaviour, was someone badly bullied and snapped, etc...

Always two sides to the story.
Not condoning the attack AT ALL and it should be considered at the highest end of the scale of grevious bodily harm.

But we only heard one side, haven't heard the "why".

This requires a heavy handed approach with a mandatory long prison sentence.

I think if word got around such as "Did you hear about the fellas in Waterford who threw acid in peoples faces? They got 15 years in prison" then I am pretty confident you would very quickly see a dramatic drop in acid attacks.

Maybe it's time localised judicial appointments require voting approval by the public instead of appointment by voted in politicians. Throwing acid/chemicals into people's faces goes beyond politics.

In cases like this, I’d be fully in favour of hobbling and forced hard labour with mandatory sentencing to force judges to do what justice demands.

Or let the people apply justice to scum like this on the streets. If they’re guilty, name them. Brand them. Tattoo their crimes on their forehead and leave them marked for life.

No but I think it's fair enough for people to speculate that immigrants are involved when this is a rare occurence in Ireland and seems to be along with knives one of the favoured weapons of the London gangs.

A certain section of our black community seem to be imitating these gangs.

...or some eejit could have seen it on the TV/in the papers and thought it a good idea to put the fear of god in people.
