Waterford acid attack

Just seen on rte 3 teens injured in acid attack last Thursday, one young lad u17 irish soccer player face looked bad and another lad on news at talking about it, think 4 arrested over it, apologies if there is a thread already.

Exactly but they range in age from 16-19 so probably a slap on the wrist, ffs if you are carrying acid around, you are doing so with intent to harm.

There's something so horrific about it. Disfiguring or blinding someone over a feud, or for a phone or because they dumped you. It's cowardly and vicious and seems like a next-level crime over beating or stabbing.

I think acid attacks should be treated the same legally as shooting someone with a gun.

Courts go out of their way to protect scum like that.

I think it should be penalised in a similar way to rape. It's an extremely serious bodily assault that causes large amounts of physical anguish. As well as this, it causes permanent physical and mental scarring.

UK recently (last couple of years) brought in legislation to pass tougher sentences in these sort of cases because they were becoming more regular.

What would the charge be? GBH?

While I don't condone it, I can at least understand why somebody would carry a weapon. But it's a special type of scum that carries out corrosive substance attacks.

Although I understand your sentiment, the reality is, rape does not get tough enough sentencing. Too much is based on the victim impact statement, putting huge stress on the victim.

What? How would having a prison built have stopped this attack?

It's the fault of the justice system, kids these days know they can get away with this, they will get a barrister who will sell a sob story and the judge will give lenient sentences.

True. There is simply no real deterrent for Irish criminals any more.

Judges won't hand down significant sentences to repeat offenders and Gardaí can't batter them.

There's more to it than that. There's a substantial chunk of the population who lack empathy or any regard for fellow human beings, people who'd stab you for a few quid, who simply don't care. They don't have a conscience, or experience shame, or think of anything other than getting what they want by any means.

Poor parenting of kids who then develop early attachment disorders and don't develop the skills to connect with other people and grow up detached and void of emotion or caring, and then those kids have kids and the cycle goes around and expands with every generation. Drugs and alcohol abuse would be at the start of it, and then it gets to a point where even if it isn't a factor the next generation don't know any better because their backgrounds don't value education or ambition so they make the same mistakes they learned by example ...and repeat ad infinitum.

Absolutely not true of the very vast majority of people in challenged circumstances, just true of a few - but enough to make a mark on the rest of society. A handful of people can cause a lot of misery for many.

And then the justice system fails society with lenient sentences that lead to people not even bothering to report crime, and fails the convicted because there's little meaningful rehabilitation to improve the outcome on release so they subject the rest of society to more criminality and so it goes around and around.

The old elephant in the room is that acid attacks are part and parcel of the grime music scene in London and other English cities. You’d hope this is an isolated incident, and not symptomatic of a wider trend.

It’s still a relatively new phenomenon on these shores, maybe when a trend emerges they’ll have to change the term

It’s not really a crime native to here; but then an increase in such incidences is probably inevitable in itself and so we’ll see what comes.

No political party will tackle sentencing in this country that's well known now. The criminals and thugs here are well of aware of that, hence the spike in crime and the place generally going down the toilet. A campaign to have 3 strike rule is desperately needed here. Now wait for all the responses saying sentencing doesn't work, it's understand why crime occurs is the key......

A difficult home life
Addiction issues
Are/Were promising footballers
Were caught in a moment of madness
Took a wrong turn in life
Fell in with the wrong people
Are deeply troubled youths
Come from an area of deprivation

Probation, maybe a suspended sentence, doubt they'll see the inside of a jail cell.

Are you willing to pay higher taxes to put away crims for longer? Many people vote for parties that should the loudest about tax cuts despite the consequences of it cutting public services.

Well with more prison space the judge could hand down a custodial sentence instead of letting these repeat offenders off with a suspended sentence free to roam the streets and commit more crime.
