The Mega Mk7 Golf GTI/GTD/R thread

Any body with either of these able to advise on what the real world economy is of these?
There is not much between them in purchase price.
The gtd 625 euro more.
I do 25000km a year and really would prefer the gti but my head tells me the gtd is what I should be looking at.
I've only driven the gti and found it very entertaining.
Dealer says resale is the same for both of them. There is only 90 euro difference in road tax and insurance the same so fuel costs are the main financial difference.

Seems strange unless you didn’t want it then. Usually they are keen to get stock out the door.

Yeah the lights are far too small on the MK8 in any of the photos I've seen.

Pre reg cars wouldn't bother me. If it means they get their artificial numbers and someone gets a good discount I don't see an issue really.

There were a lot of cars registered at the end of March - have reg's from the 22nd March in the 22,000's, 26th March in the late 26,000's, 28th March in the late 28,000's and 29th March to mid 32,000's. I've still got a car due to be collected on Friday that was registered in March.

To hit end of Q1 targets dealers first register absolutely anything that is sold and it's possible to register. That includes cars that are in for shipping but not due in for a couple of weeks - as long as the birth cert is available it can be registered.

This means they don't have to scramble around to find cars to pre-reg, to hit their target, which involves a big bonus - that's why it's more profitable to reg and sell off at a lower price, than miss the volume target for registrations.

It's unlikely in this case (and as it turned out) that the vehicle was "pre-regged" to the dealer first. They'll avoid doing that as much as possible and it very, very, very rarely gets done nowadays as the manufacturer's (especially VW) have clamped right down on that sort of thing.

Still a BS excuse about the bigger engines etc.

I’ve a golf on order due for shipping any day now (hopefully) I will be keeping a close eye on all dates on the paperwork after reading about this

Its hard to judge it yet as there is still some deceptive tape covering the final shape around the front and rear lights.

The dealer is claiming confusion on this one now, thought I was referring to value than reg numbers, hence his spec comment.

Guess I'll find out Friday if everything is in order.

As LEDs get more common, you will see more of this. They simply don't need to be as big.

This renewed my interest in further modding my car. I've just received a 7,500 vrt refund this morning (Exported the car).

I already have an apr stage 1 and revo stage 3 tune registered to the car from previous owners so I can use either and I have an uprated clutch added to it.
Very tempted as with the autobahn being as the crow flies less than a mile from my home it would make it more fun

I'd just be wary about whether I should go with forged pistons/rods for longevity if I was to go down this route and would be a huge waste of cash as I drive the car about 200 miles in 3 months :P

That’s an interesting practice. Would they ref it before it arrived into Ireland, ie while on the boat, or only when in the port compound. That’s a more aggressive position to take vis a vis the distributor. If the dealer has reg’d it in the end-customer’s name, would they have to pay the VRT early? They have no authority to make the SORD for motor tax but I suspect that’s ignored.

At present and since 2013, only the Trendline Golf is offered with hubcaps as standard, it's actually quite uncommon to see one as VW work very hard to disincentivise Trendline Golf's in Ireland and any that are available new or used are a proven slow seller.

Every other trim level has 16" or larger alloy wheels. Nobody wants hubcaps on a Golf, really.

On this topic, I've been given a late May delivery date for my Golf. Initially I was told it would be June, and with that I had told the dealer I'd probably wait until July 1st to register/collect it. He said it should be doable but that VW may push for a 191 reg!

When he gave me the new date, he said if it arrives in May, that he couldn't wait until July to register. I'm not overly bothered, but curious as to any disadvantage of getting a new registered car in May or June? Part of me feels it's 'old' as soon as 192 cars appear!

After recent posts here, I guess it's mostly to do with dealer stats/targets as to why they'd push to register straight away.

It's like this if the dealer wants to get paid they can wait. Yea your 191 reg will be old in July and worth less.

If the deal was done for May delivery of a 191 car, your trade in was also priced according to that.

If you want to hang on until 192 to retain value in the new car would you be cool with taking another hit on your trade in to reflect it being another reg period older?

I can understand if the car isn't going to turn up until June sometime due to a delay on the dealers side, there's a logical arguement for hanging on until 192 but if someone has done a deal for a 191 May delivery car from the get ok, they should be sound and honour their end of the deal by collecting it in 191 as that was the basis of the deal.

Unless you're kmart6 of course, sounds like the dealer has went ahead and reg'd his car already. I'd be curious to know how that's going to play out.

Sure if that was the deal, then that was the deal, there'll be no issue so.

I'm just saying you cant really just decide you want to sit on the deal for a month or two to get into the next reg period if that's not how the original deal was done. A dealer may facilitate you but it's not an entitlement as such.

It’s a good point about the trade in value given for a specific delivery date alright. I suppose I could let them take my car early if that was the case, if I really want to wait for 192 that is. I think that June 1st is probably a good cut off date for deciding/asking to wait for 192.

It's not really, the depreciation on the trade in will be less than the depreciation on the new car.

Import, steep enough price too, I think you'd have a new one VRT'd in Ireland for less than 20k.
