Today I did some detailing...

We have the "Today I Did Something To My Car" thread out in the main forum, and a lot of the posts on it pertain to detailing.
I thought it would be a good idea to give our various detailing activities a thread in their proper home.

I'll get the ball rolling.

Today ( ahem, last night really!), I snow foamed the car
Wasn't able to follow through and wash it properly as my back went, but couldn't believe how well it looked this morning!
In fairness I have a fair bit of LSP on it, but there was ten days worth of road film and tree sap on it.

Well impressed.

Misses asked why this was still around and not in the bin / recycled. My horrified self informed her it's a work of art that will be turned into a table / mount.

Took the opportunity before the tyre was mounted to apply some wax / sealant. The carpro didn't arrive from detailing she'd yet

so used 2 coats of hydrawax from bilt hamber then a 3rd of finished wax. Don't expect it to last too long but until the carpro stuff arrives it will do.

Give it another wash over the weekend for cars and coffee, might get the other alloy repaired just some scuffing to it

Spit shine for cars and coffee. Decided to put some tyre shine on (McGuire's) wasn't sure about it before but happy with it looks well. Threw some onto the trim as well and looks great. Shame the new grille isn't on for tomorrow.

3 buckets, sonax gloss shampoo, bilt hamber snow foam with some of their shampoo mixed in. Rinsed, foamed, rinsed, then x2 washes and dry section at a time. Wheels were done first separately just washed once then dried at the end of the wash. McGuire's tyre shine applied to tyres and trim.

Have the Irish reg plates (for a while ��) but haven't put them on quite like how the UK plates look very clean or something. The current plates are stuck on, sticky pads at the front which are very sticky. Will take a hairdryer to it and some remover stuff when I get the backing for my plates.

Rear is reallllly stuck on. Must have been a liquid adhesive. Not sure how I'll tackle that.

My plates don't have any backing so have ordered ones off eBay as didn't want to have metal plates scratching up the paint.

There are screw holes (covered ATM) up the front for a reg plate but nothing on the back afaik, unless under the plate. Don't really want to screw was just gonna use some sticky pads any tips? They're pressed metal plates.

One or two of the wheels have these funny marks on them in the corners mostly, but in other parts too. Hard to describe, not rough but can definitely feel them, almost seems scratched / marred to ****e by someone cleaning them before or left over sealant from something.

Some smaller marks buffed off today during washing but have a feeling that may have been was residue from when I did it. Might try take a hand polish / cleaner to it next time and see if there's any effect. Any ideas what it could be? Gloss wheels so new one for me.

Fishing wire or similar and go up and down while sliding around the rear of the plate.

I used double sided industrial tape and on the car over 9 years.

Fishing wire save the paint? Any need for some heat? Kinda figured the heat (As much heat as a hairdryer will generate...) would help with cleaning up left over residue.

Yeah some double sided tape or pads i think is the way i'll go. Hopefully doesn't do anything to the paint.

Beast of a motor. Its just an absolute bastard for picking up rock chips and today I discovered its just as bad for picking up little rock chips on the windscreen...

Yesterday I did some work on the Leon (it was massively overdue)............

The process was

Rinse down to get the loose dirt
Snowfoamed with BH AutoFoam & rinsed
Snowfoamed again (it was VERY dirty!)
2BW with BH Auto-Wash
Wheel arch liners, etc were coated with BH Surfix and worked in with various brushes. Rinsed off.
The sides & rear of the car below the window line were dried as well as the front bumper
Two applications of CarPro Tar-X and rinsed off (Geez that's great tack!)
A misting of BH Korrisol was applied and left to react. The boot door was the worst for the purple. Rinsed off.
Next was claying with a mix of DnD Detailing clay, CarPro ClayCloth and CarPro Immolube. Note to self, never start claying with the boot door. I started there and it was so bad I had to throw the clay out immediately after one panel!
The car was foamed again, rinsed down and re-washed using the 2BW
Dried with a Cry-me-Crazy. The car was finally clean.
LUNCH!
The panels were wiped down with CarPro Eraser and then IPA. I left it then about 30 minutes for the IPA residues to flash off.
Two coats of Gtechniq C2V3 were applied with about 3 hours between coats

The wheels were also done as above (washed with BH AutoWheels and then as above, detarred, clayed, etc) and they got a coating of Gtechniq C5. As I had to keep the wheels dry overnight and "something" was in the garage, I built up boxes from corriboard to keep then dry. Tyres were dressed with CarPro PERL 1:1 water.

While waiting for the second coating of C2V3 to be applied, I tackled the engine with BH surfix 1:3 in water to clean and dressed with CarPro PERL 1:3 in water. The external trims also got a coating of CarPro PERL 1:3 water.

Wheels complete..........

Yes I know the dark accents in the wheel are not showing up that well in the photo. It was late when I finished and I used my phone for the photos. I wasn't breaking out the SLR to get decent snaps

While you’re at it get an outside electrical socket for powerwasher. Something that’s on my to do list also.

What pads to use on detailing, have black volvo v40 r design, have rotary machine but not sure what pads to use, as in from beginning to end, apologies for ignorance, just want to make sure I do it right, and really appreciate any help

What pads you use will come down to the job in hand and what you requir, what pads you got etc etc.

If you go into detail chat thread lads will answer the questions as you could get several essays for answers to certain questions and that's the thread for best answers.

Plus this thread is for the results and lots of pretty pictures.

Did a bit of a wheel detail at the weekend. Wash, decontaminate, detar, degrease, machine polished the face to remove scuffs and polished the inner barrel to shine it up a bit after claying, Gtechniq panel wipe wipe-down, 2 coats of Gtechniq C2V3 and a top coat of Gtechniq QD.

This is not a "whole vehicle" type job but I got sick of the external shower door and external gas connection door on one of the motorhomes.............

The plastics got sun bleached from staying in Spain for prolonged period. The annoying thing is that the rest of the external plastics (fridge vents, door surrounds, etc) didn't fade and it looked cack. CarPro PERL would hide the effects for a while (two months or so) but I wanted something a bit more permanent.

The process was:

1. Mask off the two doors

2. Wipe them down with CarPro Eraser and leave it to "flash off"

3. Apply two thin coats of Gtechniq C4.

It was repeated on some other small door catches.

Washed/de-tarred/de-ironed the family Octavia estate today. Lovely warm, sunny weather but not ideal conditions for this work outdoors.
It’s nice to see a clean car underneath it all and there was plenty of dirt built up - I’ve no pics though. I ran out of time to clay it, polish and seal it as I ended up washing my parents Golf too so that’s something for the coming days when the sun isn’t splitting the stones.
I used Autobrite citrus wash, Autobrite Magi-Foam, Tuga-Chemie Wheel cleaner, Sonax tar remover, Sonax iron remover, 2 bucket method using Meguiars Gold Class shampoo. I’m hoping I’ll find the time to apply some Fusso - I still haven’t tried this out yet!

Waxed a tiny section of the roof the other day, after removing a bit of iron fallout and poop.
You can clearly see where i've freshly waxed and not.

Joined the black car club a month ago, it had it's weekly clean this evening.

Love the colour when it's just washed but it'll take some maintenance!

As much as we all love to do full paint corrections to the best of our ability, time is not always on your side especially when trying to maintain a black car. I would therefore highly recommend glazes or the likes of Meg's three in one, prima amigo etc to keep the car looking it's best (in conjunction with a good wax/sealant of course).
