The Mega Mk7 Golf GTI/GTD/R thread

Any body with either of these able to advise on what the real world economy is of these?
There is not much between them in purchase price.
The gtd 625 euro more.
I do 25000km a year and really would prefer the gti but my head tells me the gtd is what I should be looking at.
I've only driven the gti and found it very entertaining.
Dealer says resale is the same for both of them. There is only 90 euro difference in road tax and insurance the same so fuel costs are the main financial difference.

I never had problems getting my tyres I bought online fitted, they've always been 18 inch or 19 inch and has only varied from €10-15 to fit and balance. Some tyre fitting shops have the fitting prices on some of the websites so when you buy the tyres and I get them sent straight to them

You will save very little if anything buying common size tyres online over bricks and mortar shops. You only really save when your buying awkward size or high end tyres that just not going to be stocked locally due to the small demand for them.

Any words of wisdom? Given the history, is it a fair price?
It is a decent spec?

They both look in rag order. State of the seat bolster on that first one, mother of god. A tidy MK5 is a very hard find these days.

On the topic of mk5 GTI’s for anyone who may be interested there’s a lad I’ve been watching on YouTube who bought one as a project car and has been upgrading it mostly by himself with some help along the way, good viewing for anyone into their golfs IMO

I think the arse fell out of them last year.

A friend had a 07, manual, 3dr black with good history recent clutch and 4x tyres, low kms and plenty of test, clean body and no tacky mods and he couldn't give it away, took around €3500 for it iirc just recently after being on sale months. I know it wasn't loaded with extras but it was cheap for what it was. The few Mk6's that are out there now are €10k cars.

Yeah, I'd 2nd the autostadt recommendation. More likely to find a cared for enthusiast owned example on there. A quick glance now and I see a couple of MK5's up for sale there.
I think there is / was a Pirelli Edition for sale there too, that would be a very nice pick.

I've been watching his videos since probably late 2017. He does great videos imo and his GTI upgrade series has been very interesting.

That seat bolster appears to be a common issue. When I bought mine with only 50k kms on the clock many years ago the bolster was stitched together also, worse than that one even. The car was otherwise immulucate and was a few k cheaper than many others (and never had any issues so it was gunuine) so I ignored the bolster and planned to get a new seat, 7 years later it’s still the same as I never tried too hard to find a seat for it in the end.

I've seen the odd video from him when looking at GTI, R and more recently Cupra reviews. I've been following the high mileage GTI recently too and it's interesting to see. Hopefully he sticks to the budget/DIY stuff.

Not a fan of the wheels he out on it though :P

Not uncommon no, and some wear is expected on a ~10 year old car but when it looks like a dog was chewing it, it’s just too much for me. I would consider it a visible symptom of a ragged unloved car. If the last owner or dealer can’t be bothered tidying it up, what else has been skimped on. Lots I bet.

I think a lot depends on the waistline of the owner:P
Mine was a tiny bit worn when I bout it 3/4 years ago and hasnt changed since.
It you want to fix yours I think its easy to fit a passenger side seat back to your existing seat base.

Is anyone on here familiar with the VW production and delivery process?

I have on golf on order since mid November, originally due for delivery end of January which never happened. Was then told end of April/start of May, chased it up this week to check on the progress and was told the car was ‘handed over to the factory this week’ ‘should be finished build in 2 weeks’

How long is the build process, I always assumed 1 week as it gets referred to as ‘build week allocation’

Where is the car handed over from before the factory? Is it not made in the factory

I know VW have massive delays with WLTP and I’m okay with that just wondering how the process works now that it seems the car is actually being made

In my experience the build itself is only a day and takes place in whatever week it's planned for. That could be the very start of the week or as late as the end of the week. Then it depends on when it gets on a train to the port and onto a boat. I think it's usually 2-3 weeks after build week that you can expect it to be at the dealer. Did they look after you because of the delay? I ordered start of Nov and was told Feb, when that slipped to April I was given another 700 quid off the car and free servicing for 3 years.

Free servicing for 3 years is a nice little bonus! Did they offer that up voluntarily or did you push them for something?

I haven’t been offered anything, I didn’t ask as I already got a 3k discount in the deal and didn’t think they’d go with anymore than that, they’re also standing over the original trade in price which I’m not sure is much of a benefit as the delays aren’t my fault but how and ever! Fed up with the whole process really just want the car

I added some options after the January delay so the price has actually gone up rather than getting anything off :L

2-3 weeks from build to being at the dealers is ambitious. 5 weeks is probably closer to average. A few things would need to line up and fall neatly into place for it to be less than 3 weeks - arrive at departing port just as ship is ready to load up, etc. Miss that boat and it could be 2-3 weeks waiting for the next one.

Yeah build only takes a day from start to finish afaik. So if you have a build week, it will be build complete that week. Then add 4-5 weeks onto that for it to arrive to dealers.

It's worth a chat anyway, I wouldn't be happy with waiting much longer than the typical maximum of 3 months for the car. I just complained and mentioned cancelling my order and they came back with an offer to keep me onside. I think in situations like this it's VW who will take the hit on any additional discounts etc. I also had a bigger discount than 3k from day 1 and they honoured the original trade in price.
