Help oil delivered to my house didn't order it

As title says.
I was out all day, when I came back there was docket in the door, for oil worth 210€.
I was very confused. I didn't order any oil. When checked over it was wrong adress. Next door neighbours one. And their name and all. Went over to them this evening. They where waiting for delivery today and it never came. My house has huge nummber sign on just by the door!!!
So anyway now I have their oil in my tank? How do I give it back to them?
Before anyone says just pay for the oil. I cant I'm really stuck as is without forking 210 € for oil I didn't order...

Yeah it's electric, it uses elements to heat water in the tank.

Let's work this out... when people freak out about the immersion being left on is it because
1. They were low on oil or
2. They fear a big electricity bill.

Happened me before Christmas, a different oil company delivered 500 litres by mistake, the driver left a note and asked me to call him.
I explained I have a payment plan set up with my usual company - so didn’t have the money to pay straight away
They said no problem, pay by instalments and gave me a €50 discount
Worked out ok, as I just put a temporary stop on payments to my regular company until I cleared the balance.
They also offered to come and take the oil back if I preferred

It's a free gift OP, keep it. The company can go whistle, their mistake their problem.

But if they were able to access your tank to put it in, any of your light fingered scrap recycling horse loving neighbours can access your tank to take it out. So get a lock...

Strictly speaking this is not the case. If someone delivers something to you by mistake, it doesn't automatically belong to you and they are entitled to collect it at their expense.

It doesn't matter if it's a box from Amazon or 200L of heating oil.

If you refuse to give it back, they would be entitled to bill you for it.

It's a driver's mistake so it might be his problem. Honesty is best here, especially because your neighbours know you got the oil. It's not worth falling out with them for 210 euro. But I wouldn't pay it unless it suits you if they offer some payment plan and discount. Otherwise they can collect it and deliver it to your neighbour.

No they won’t because it will have mixed with whatever was already in it and they won’t have provenance for what they extract. The distribution and sale of oil is regulated for a reason. They may be able to take it back from the tank but they should dispose of it rather than sell it.

OP any update on this?

Best bet is probably ring the oil company and explain their mistake. Say your shirt on money but offer them €150 for it, if they don’t accept asknthem what they’re going to do about it but I’d say they’ll accept for the sake of €60.

This was the very first thing I thought of when I read the first post.
There are two types of heating oil, Kerosene and Gas Marked Oil (Diesel).
It can be a big problem if the wrong oil goes into the wrong tank, particularly if Diesel goes into a newer high efficiency condensing Kerosene boiler.
So more importantly, the o.p. really needs to take a look at the delivery docket to ensure that it is the same oil type that he normally gets delivered.

It was fairly common years ago and its still in use, but not as much nowadays as older boilers are being replaced, but still wise for the o.p. to double check.

Have had this happen exactly last year. Rang the company, told them they mis-delivered. The truck came out the next day, and removed the oil (seems like the fill pipe also works to drain, no surprise there). No problem, no fuss. They extracted exactly as much as they had put in, I checked levels before and after.

It's been mentioned a few times including the post above yours..
Phone the oil supplier and let them sort it out.

you never ordered any oil, you didn't steal any oil, you owe your neighbours absolutely nothing, I'd maybe put a lock on the back gate and the oil tank because if this happened so easy then what's stopping somebody from stealing your oil, end of story and go about your business

yes they can, I stated they can take out the exact volume of
what they put in, nothing more, if it's all kerosene theres no reason why they couldn't use it again
