Anyone else listen to Sean Moncrieff in the afternoons? I couldn't take anymore Joe Duffy, the misery was wearing me down. I'm not decided if I like Sean's programme or not, but it's a change from the unrelenting tales of woe.

There was a regular chap on the other day giving his TV reviews. He was reviewing Ricky Gervais' After Life. It was possibly the worst reviewing job I have ever heard. He started of by saying that Gervais' stand up special on Netflix was badly received and reviewed (7.9 on IMDB), and then continued on unchallenged to say that After Life (8.6 on IMDB) was some sort of last chance saloon for Gervais', and that it wasn't very good.

Practically every serious writer or commentator on the genre has said that After Life is superb.

Sooooo...... not everyone thinks it is superb. Even the IMDB rating would indicate 1 in 5 doesn't like it.

Very hard to find a totally objective tv/film critic because so much of opinions on such media is based on a subjective opinion.

I have heard its v good though myself, must check it out on Netflix. I liked the office and Extras but never really rated his standup stuff.

It wasn't just that the reviewer didn't particularly like the show, it was the blatant lying that went unchallenged. The reviewer said that Humanity was poorly received due to Gervais' piece on Trans, and that After Life was a last chance saloon for him. Pure and utter nonsense.

What happened was, the woke reviewer didn't like the segment in Humanity about Trans and discussed it within his echo chamber, who also didn't like it, and then carried this prejudice onto his review of After Life. He declared this prejudice as fact and not an opinion. The reality is, outside of a certain woke echo chamber, Humanity was highly regarded. And you really would have to exist inside a certain echo chamber to garnish After Life with those sort of prejudices. Even very left leaning reviewers have said that After Life is excellent.

That reviewer on Moncrief reviewed the show based on his dislike of Gervais.

Your use of phrases like 'woke', echo-chamber, 'left-leaning' tells me your trying to fight a different fight than whether or not Gervais's program was well made.

I enjoyed After Life myself, it was funny and sad but easy to watch. Not really the biggest fan of Gervais as a stand up usually just to add. Am fairly sure he sells out Madison Square Garden amongst other big venues fairly regularly so he'll be doing fine with or without this show being a 'hit'.

The Netflix special was pretty funny.

After Life is the same old themes, jokes and characters from Gervais. Nothing new at all really.

God that does seem to be a bit eerie.

I suppose it's inevitable that people will pass away and maybe it is more noticeable that this has happened to presenters from his show because Sean generally keeps going with the same slots and people for much longer than might happen in most places.

It's done in a comedic way. Best advice generally comes from a texter.

That is a fantastic idea for a segment. I had never heard of it before, although I had heard in passing about Prof Terry Dolan and his love of literature.

There is a (surprisingly) huge interest in etymology, even among people who might not be particularly interested in literature.

Sorry to hear Terry Dolan has passed away, but I do hope the segment is reintroduced.

He's one that will do really well if given the right platform I feel.
