..As well as being a waste of money, the cutting was also a serious hazard to navigation. It is very narrow in places, so boats had trouble passing each other, and, with the towpath up much higher than the canal, many horses were dragged into the canal and drowned. Worse still, in November 1845 there was a serious accident in the cutting. A passenger boat hit a rock on the edge of the cutting at night, and capsized deep in the cutting, drowning 16 people. ...

The houses in Delwood Park also look out on one of the largest green spaces I have ever seen in a housing estate. What is most disappointing about this consultation process is, not the fears of the residents, but the fact that these have been encouraged and amplified by most local politicians. These "public servants" are, or should be, aware of the bigger picture and with a bit of research should see that many of the local fears are unfounded. While Councillors are obviously focused on the upcoming local elections, there is really no excuse for some of the TDs.

I trust that any bridge they may impose would be of a "slightly" higher quality and spec than the excuse for a pedestrian bridge they contracted alongside the bridge at Coolmine. It is a rattling mess, even with a child floating across it, and how any contractor was allowed walk away from it in its present state is typical of the public service approach. But then it is public money and as they say-- spend it or lose it in next years budget.Though a bit off topic it is a joke as the pedestrians from the Kirkpatrick side do not use it and safety is still compromised. A pedestrian crossing should have been considered to encourage use of the bridge. Planning ???? The same planning process designed the pedestrian crossings very immediately off the roundabouts in the Ongar area, which defeat the whole rationale of roundabouts.
