The 4wd diesel is a waste of time unless you’re towing or actually need 4wd. They’re a ticking time bomb of a yoke.

Are the 08 Rav 4s any good?

Personally I much prefer the second generation shape, looks far more like a proper off roader. The third generation looks like a mammy wagon. I think the interior on the second generation is better too, if you can get leather and climate control it's a lovely work horse imho. Don't think the 4wd diesel is great on fuel tho.
I think the rear seats on the second generation can be completely removed too, which is handy.

Lower tax will mean diesel which at your budget for post 2008 will be a minefield.

Newer model rav4 in diesel is a risk. Tax on the petrol got higher in 08. How long do you realistically think you’ll need this car for?

3 months tax on a 1.8 is roughly 180. You’ll buy an 05 Rav for €1100 and sell it again for the same money in a few months.
