Building a nice shed

Hi all,

We recently bought a bungalow with some land which has great views and character. My boyfriend wants to build a shed to store his boat, work on cars, do woodwork etc.

We are struggling to decide where to place the shed so as not to obstruct our views but still have it close to the house. We have had some ideas, but always come back to the issue that the shed is going to take away from the appearance of the house, or the views, or the character of the garden/land.

Is it overkill to have an architect design a shed? Do architects design sheds? Has anybody built an interesting shed which adds to, rather than takes away from, the appearance of their home? We want something modern and low maintenance which looks well.

Questions:

- How much internal floor area?
- What height at the peak/ridge of the roof?
- Will it be continuously, occasionally, or never heated?
- Will it be visible from the road?
- What is the external finish of the house?

You could build in the same style and finish as the house. Or else perhaps if it is near trees or shrubs paint it green to camoflage it?

Is the boat a dug out canoe, a 20 ft. rowing boat or a 5 berth yacht :P ?
Depending on site lay out etc. and of course size of yacht/boat you will need direct access from road to shed and a roller shutter door or similar on gable facing road. As most girls know size is important so you can never have a shed that's too big.......99% of sheds end up being too small....so most end up with 2 or 3 half size sheds instead of building one decent size one first time. Allow room for clothes line, chest freezers etc.
So build the biggest shed you can afford preferably with twin 4'' walls and PVC coated roof insulated sheeting or else single skin sheeting with felt membrane underneath - it will work out cheaper. Single skin sheeting without insulation or felt will drip almost constantly especially in winter and ruin everything in the shed.........but maybe not your yacht as it's designed to withstand water.:)
Forget spending a fortune on the ascetics of the exterior & on engineers just plaster & paint
Keep an eye on the likes of Done Deal etc. for PVC windows & side door almost good as new can be got for less than half price.
Plant fast growing shrubs & tress to screen it form house.
