Well, historically you're not too far off the truth. Baden-Powell set up the Scouts in 1907/1910 as a training camp for recruits to the British Empire's forces. Irish republicans at the time set up Fianna Éireann in response and many of the insurgents in the Easter Rising had been members of FÉ. Baden Powell's establishment of a youth movement for British imperialism inspired Mussolini and Hitler in the 1920s to create their respective youth movements for fascism. Do you really think that historical child abuse cases is something to have a little joke about? Have you any idea of the extreme lifetime damage caused to these people?

In fairness to that poster, I can see his point. No man would ever want any suspicion cast upon him over such a thing. A suspicion alone could destroy somebody in our tiny society - "no smoke without fire", etc.

Consequently, if he'd really like to take his nephew fishing, the smart and best way to do it is by having other people there to protect his good name in the event of any such suspicions. A sad state of affairs indeed, but better to be safe than sorry.

I was in the cub scouts which was fantastic. Learnt a lot, and it was a lot of fun. The scouts was somewhat intimidating, the older kids in my group were complete cnuts. Lots of bullying, they would drink, take drugs etc. Didn't like it all that much. Never heard of any wrong doings from the leaders in either groups.

A lot of hard working people giving up their time freely to help kids develop skills and allow them have fun.

My kids are in the scouts and it's done them no end of good.

I think the thing here will be about how it was dealt with. I always suspected a story like this would break about the scouts. Just like any other part of society where adults had access to children in times when there were no garda checks and the likes. I was in the scouts and the leaders were absolute legends, I would imagine that's the same for the majority. I can't imagine child abuse would have gone on and it dealt with the same way as other organisations dealt with it. But it remains to be seen, if we ever get to hear the truth of it all.

Tbf let's not just blankly deny what happened. It happened and there are records in Larchhill. That doesn't mean that all scout leaders were at it but there's no point in trying to protect good people by denying that any of this ever happened.

You have massively taken that part of my post out of context and twisted it. The whole point of my post was NOT denying the child abuse happened. But was wondering how the child abuse THAT HAPPENED was dealt with.

Abuse in scouting has been going on since the beginning, lets not forget what was the main scouting organisation in Ireland for 80 years, But my question is why did other scouters not report it to the authorities. the old line .

I was in a different organisation in the 80s where isolated cases of abuse have now emerged. While it's not a huge surprise to me given my opinions at the time of the individual concerned, I never had any actual evidence that could be reported to the authorities.

I have to say I spent many enjoyable years in the scouts

I got to go to places camping that I would never have gone to, and learned some handy skills along the way
got to meet children from other parts of Ireland and abroad

the adults who ran the whole thing gave their time generously and I am thankful for it
and once those adults stopped being involved the local scout troop folded

so I hope the scouts can recover from all this recent negativity, and more importantly sorts out the management issues that are being highlighted
It is a great organisation, which provides a great outlet for children. especially those who mightn't be into sports
