Welcome to the Mayo GAA discussion thread - Chapter 3, yer trotting them out quicker than a Mills & Boon Romance !.

This is one of the most active forums on Boards.ie. As a result, discussion can get quite heated. But there are certain things posters must realise are simply not OK to post:

Very very frustrating

They were a point a down with 15 minutes to go and were motoring but went nowhere.

This league is getting uglier by the game.

They could do with a pair of wins to finish off the league but I'd doubt they will

We could be facing into the championship with a league record of WWWLLLL

Awful at times from Mayo. No composure up front and zero game management. Need to get the likes of Plunkett back in.

Boyles loss of pace is noticable and you can bet your last euro he'll be caught on numerous occasions this season. There's a few players there on the wrong side of their best.

Back to a point with 15 to play and a gale force wind behind us and don't score again until the game is over in injury time? As I feared, we just don't have the forwards to counteract defensive sides. Best team in Ireland at coming from behind but just don't have it in us to feckin push on in these matches

Galway were later back this year, affected by injuries yet still we can't beat them. Worrying stuff

Ok, it'll all be forgotten by the summer if we can reclaim Connacht but there is zero chance we can even begin to think about looking beyond Roscommon at this rate.

Sadly what looked like a very positive result against Tyrone has been well and truly now classed as a false dawn against what was ultimately a team completely undercooked

I suppose the main positive is that it can't get any worse than these last 2 weeks. Can only improve. But with a predominantly ageing side likely to be taking to the field in the summer it doesn't overly bode well

It won't be boyle that will prove your undoing. For whatever reason, for as long as I can remember, Mayo have never had and still don't have 3 or 4 quality forwards. Its always been your undoing and I don't know why that is.

While I agree to a certain extent, let's not forget that Cillian O Connor is still out.

I wager that the two frees into the keepers hands would have been put over by him, putting a different complexion on the game.

I don't disagree with that. Bang on in fairness but it doesn't help that our best defenders are on the wrong side of age.

I find it hard to blame the management when the players claw back a large half time deficit, the game is there on a plate to be won, and then they just freeze.

It happened in both 16 finals and in 14 v Kerry, and quite frankly is why we're All Ireland-less.

I don't think I've ever seen a side like Mayo the last few years to refuse to be beaten. Even against arguably the greatest side ever, they have looked dead and buried in finals yet clawed their way back. But that's where it ends. It must be a psychological thing but daftness then starts to creep into the play just when it appears like they can push on and win. For a top side I've never seen a team to make so much unforced errors when a game is in a melting pot

I would have given you about 1/10 Mayo would win after 55 minutes. Kerry and Dublin would have potentially won by double figures in the same scenario :mad:

COC is one man and hes hit and miss in big games. You need at least 3 consistent scorers and I've never seen a Mayo team that had that. You've always overcome that shortfall with pure heart and determination but it has proved costly on the big day. Its hard to understand why it seems to be that way for decades.

The conditions werent awful last week though. I dread the Championship, absolutely zero faith in Horan.

It says it all when a Dublin sub (Cormac Costello - not even their first choice sub) contributed more in a half of football in the 2016 replay than any Mayo forward I can ever remember in a final, with the possible exception of Andy Moran in 2017.

You're spot on. As fans we often become collectively sensitive when the media continually cite our lack of 'marquee' forwards but if we're honest they're not far off the mark. Tomas O'Se highlighted it recently, he felt of the Tyrone side in the 00s and his own Kerry side there was always at least 5 consistent top quality forwards on either side. He said Mayo had 1 in O'Connor and I wouldn't disagree with him

I can't see it. Galway quite clearly have our number, and while Walsh's style of play at times isn't the easiest on the eye it is incredibly effective against Mayo. I think we'll need a lot of luck against Galway (will we even beat Roscommon though?), an early sending off, a fluke goal or two, we could do with anything we can get. Even then I wouldn't back us given the psychological hold they now have over us. Thank heavens I enjoyed those wins from 2011-15 as much as I could while they lasted

A team with good forwards and direct play will ultimately undo that Galway side, but Mayo's ponderous build up and lateral handpassing ain't gonna cut it.

The only hope I'm clinging on to now is that we were every bit this bad in the league in 2017 and until August, when suddenly we sprung to life and could have won an All Ireland

However we haven't played well since that final, and its now a year and a half on. Sadly the list of teams we could conceivably lose to in championship looks like its growing quite considerably from 2/3 a few years back.

I think the supporters deserve a little bit more than this and last week .
To give up 1.1 in and 10 minute period where galway had 2sin bins is unreal . I’m starting to think what other counties would do with such support ?
Really dissapointed against a average to poor Galway team . The lateral play in the first half is just unacceptable.
The demise of this great team seems to already in an advanced stage

I don't know, Management have to be answerable too. Early in the second half, when we were mounting the comeback, the ball went out of play and into Horan's hands... he hands it to Vaughan to take it. Vaughan proccedes to lump a hopeless ball wide.

If the manager isn't showing some brains and composure, it's hard to see his team showing them.

I suppose my overall point is that failing to land a knock-out blow in big games was a feature of all of Horan's, Connelly's and Rochford's reigns too. It just seems to be a psychological obstacle ingrained in our players

I'll be honest I wasn't expecting Horan's return to be so testing so early. He has some big calls to make already. Some top servants from the 2011-2017 years are on borrowed time by this point.

Going two men down actually suited Galway, they just put all players back and frustrated Mayo, the fact that they got the goal (I missed it on TV) was a bonus for them.

Mayo can't kick over the blanket, nor move the ball quick enough to counteract it, nor find the tight angles to shoot.

They know what way Galway set up yet they keep trying the same old stuff.

We keep giving up the same goal chances as well

How did Horan adjust the team to take adavantage during that period? How did he react to maximize our 2 man advantage

Eoin o Donoghue and Plunkett amongst the unused subs
Conor Loftus nowhere to be seen whilst Darren Coen (selected by no mayo manager bar Horan ) played the full game

It's not the forwards' fault that we conceded a goal against 13 players. That changed the whole game. We were never going to do much in the 1st half against the gale (similar to Roscommon game).

Darren Coen kicked one great score in the 2nd half but we just don't play to his strengths. Boyle, Vaughan, Aidan etc just put the head down, break a tackle and handpass laterally.

Indeed it seems we are sticking with one of Stephen Rochford’s traits of using the minimum of subs & doing most of them in injury time

And this is why I was so pessimistic about this match last week. It wasn't a kneejerk reaction to the Dublin loss, it's simply because of the above as I had pointed out. Barring a lot of intangibles going our way I can't see us beating Galway for a long time in any game

I would always have given us a better chance in Killarney than against Galway and their system.

I actually think we will rattle Kerry but the issues remain

I may need to watch it back but if I remember correctly, the Mayo forwards allowed Galway a short kickout that led to the goal. Regardless of the wind, that seems wrong when you've 2 extra players.
