But joking aside, so many people seem to have no idea how to drive in them. People turning right hardly ever seem to realise that you can sit in them when you are turning right, the difference being that an extra few cars can generally get through on any light sequence. Am I the only person who has noticed this?

It is only permitted where your passage through is interrupted by the flow of oncoming traffic, the notion being that you can exit clearly when they get a red light or their flow of traffic backs up. If you have no clear passage through a yellow box because the road you wish to move onto is backed up with traffic, then you cannot enter a yellow box even if making a right turn.

Yellow box junctionsThese junctions consist of patterns of criss-cross yellow lines. An exception is when you want to turn right. In this case, you may enter the yellow box junction while waiting for a gap in traffic coming from the opposite direction. However, don’t enter the box if to do so would block other traffic that has the right of way.

(2) Sub-article (1) shall not apply where a driver of a vehicle intending to make a right-hand turn at a junction enters the crosshatched area for that purpose.
