I'm a married 35 yr old father of one, started running in late 2010 to accompany my Dad on a race and done nothing again till March 2011. Ran the Clontarf Half that year in under 1.45 and again done nothing for 3-4 months. Started taking it more seriously in 2012 and hoped to run DCM that year but a bout of plantar faciitis put an end to that.

Started back again in October 2012 and from then till May 2013 i was in my best form since i took running up. Ran all my PBs in that period. Cue June last year i went in for a supposed simple operation that would see me off running for max 6 weeks, two knee ops later i'm back running since mid February and back chasing my old self. List of my PBs below:

5k - 18.47 (May 13)
5mile - 31.43 ( April 13)
10k - 41.10 (February 13)
10 mile - 67.39 (March 13)
Half Marathon - 1.31.39 (May 13)

Any input/advice/abuse greatly appreciated.

Monday 11.2.19

6.75 miles Easy@8.27min/miles in 57mins 01secs

My first run in 12 days, the cold i had took longer to overcome than i normally would and i still wasn't 100% on this but i was dying to run:o:o:o. It was a glorious sunny day in Den Haag so nowhere else to run only out by the North Sea. My hip and knee in my left leg were sore after, my bad leg.

Tuesday 12.2.19

7.10 miles Easy@8.18min/miles in 58mins 55secs

Little bit longer route than Monday but avoiding the sea this time, in around Ockenburgh on the flat and back home through Mozartlaan, the sun was beaming once more and i was over dressed really for this. Again my hip/knee was really sore, more so than yesterday!!!

Wednesday 13.2.19

Rest Day, not that i wanted to but day was a bust. Redeeming factor, the eldest scored a hat trick in his soccer match to help his u-8 team to a 5-3 win!!! One super proud Dad:D:D:D:D.

Thursday 14.2.19

8.10 miles Easy@8.24min/miles in 68mins 06secs

Once more the sun was in the sky and beaming down on the North Sea, i was feeling the love on this but my knee and hip just didn't feel the same way, both sore intermittently during the run. Got home and done some exercises i was given when my hip was a real issue, helped big time.

Friday 15.2.19

2 mile w/u, 3x10min@LT(3min rec), 2 mile c/d

I done this more or less to the day the month previous, wish i felt like i did then!! Maybe to soon after a bad dose but i felt it was the most reasonable session to do. First 10 mins was comfortableish, next less so, last was car crash stuff and don't know how i managed the pace!!

I clocked 1.50 miles for each 10 mins but it was brutal stuff, phlegm and spit all over the place as well as my lungs on the last 10 minutes. 9.55 miles for my morning. Knee in bits later in the day:mad::mad::mad:.

Saturday 16.2.19

Rest Day, soccer match with the young lad. They won 3-2, he scored all 3. Knee very sore.

Sunday 17.2.19

Rest Day, should call my fcking log Rest Day!! Day trip to Amsterdam to celebrate the Soccer Star's birthday. I had promised i wouldn't run today a long time ago so i didn't. Knee is hugely better after an intense evening of exercises i should have been doing but being a lazy bastid i ignored:rolleyes::rolleyes:.

31.50 miles for my week. This log is starting to be full of excuses, drama and what not as far as i'm concerned. The LT miles on Friday proved a sub 20 5k is an achievement currently, let alone a 18.20 or similar. The dose i caught proved much harder to shake than i thought. Didn't help that a few old niggles that proved hard to shift in the past reared there ugly faces this week either.

But sure it is what it is really, hobby isn't it. My young lad scored 6 goals this week in 2 games, he smiled at Dad with the most happy, beaming smile for every goal. Fcuk me that's miles more important than running.

I’d definitely have limited that LT to two reps after being sick. But you know now! You’ll be grand.

I knew from a while back i would be behind the 8 ball this week regarding runs as i had in-laws visiting and i was chief chaperone for the visit. Got out through Kijkduin on towards Ockenburgh and home. Knee was fine on this.

Wednesday 20.2.19

2 mile w/u, 12x90secs@5k(60sec rec), 2 mile c/d

The bog standard warm up to the running paths in Westduinpark, genuinely apprehensive about this. I wasn't 100% still, why i don't know but just did not feel 100% Barry:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:. The cold was still lingering somewhat i felt and after the previous Friday's LT run this looked daunting. Warm went as expected, said i'd call it after 2-3 if i didn't feel great and wanted to keep it at the slower end of 5k if was able. Conscious to keep the pace manageable as i could. First few went well so stuck with it, pace consistent whole way through, look not as easy as i had hoped at this stage but better:

5.57, 5.58, 5.56, 5.58, 5.56, 5.55, 5.57, 5.57, 5.57, 5.58, 5.55, 5.52.

Good session looking back, somewhat comfortable. 8.15 miles all in. Life begins at.......

Thursday 21.2.19

6.40 miles Easy@8.34min/miles in 54mins 39secs

Legs in bits to be honest on this, just not happy at all, very sore the whole way through the run. Knee and hip acted up again, looking back i wore a pare of runners i suspected were near being retired so maybe an explanation for the legs feeling so rough.

Friday 22.2.19

7.45 miles Easy@8.19min/miles in 61mins 59secs

Late night, few to many drinks and having our smallest sleeping in the same room was beginning to catch up. She's only small but man can she snore, i get awoken by a mouse farting so not ideal. Loop around Kijkduin and home, legs still fatigued but better than day before. Bad runners still taking it out on the legs.

Saturday 23.2.19

8.25 miles Steady@7.23min/miles in 60mins 58secs

If there was ever a run to show i had suffered 11 days off due to illness this was it, struggle the whole way through it. January's paces are WAY better than February's!!! Last month 7.22 was floating, February ain't anything like that!! Again over working and not in control, maybe long sleepless week taking its toll on me but i really had hoped to be way further on at this stage of the year fitness wise.

Sunday 24.2.19

Rest Day, the missus is in Rome watching the 6 Nations while i stay at home and take care of the children(that so doesn't sound right!!!!)

38.15 miles for the week, granted i knew well in advance of this week i would miss two days but i genuinely thought i would be way ahead of where i am fitness wise. I still don't feel 100% after my cold, energy isn't what it should be and body is taking time to recover even after easy runs.

We are away in Milan from Monday on, not 100% sure if i'll even bring my runners, the early season goal of the CPC 5K by AD has been well and truly forgotten about at this stage. I am entered and will run as best as i can but won't come within an asses roar of a PB!!

Enjoy the time in Milan and use it as recovery. Your auld body is telling you it takes longer to recover from illness and lack of sleep.

We wrere staying in the Feltre area of Milan and i was lucky enough that less than half mile up the road was Parco Lambro, called Milan's largest green area and so called due to the Lambro river that runs through it a tributary of the River Po. First thing that struck me was the graffiti, it was everywhere if anything was upstanding it was covered. Also the park was filthy, rubbish strewn all over the place and very very unkempt. I was told you wouldn't have entered the park 20 years ago as it was a den for drug users, prostitution and popular place for Wiseguys to dispose of bodies:eek:.

It was a hive of activity though, runners, walkers, skateboarders, roller-bladers all out. I followed the other runners and found them running a 1.5 mile circuit along the river then away towards the centre of the park and back again, it was a chilly morning but once the sun appeared it was quiet warm. Nice run in new surroundings.

Wednesday 27.2.19

Another enjoyable jaunt around Parco Lambro, loads out exercising like the morning before, woke with a scratchy throat which persisted through the day.

Thursday 28.2.19

Spent the early afternoon with the eldest lad doing a tour of the San Siro stadium, some football ground and he was well impressed to see AC and Inter's dressing rooms. Out late afternoon around Parco Lambro again, throat worse today and chest a bit wheezy:rolleyes:. This was anything but enjoyable. Last run on Italian soil, Parco Lambro was a great facility to have while i was here and my first impressions of it were wrong, its an area locals embrace and give great use to.

Friday 1.3.19

Rest Day, traveling home from Italia, throat and chest still rough.

That's me for the week, throat as i suspected has developed into a septic throat. I've ended the month as i began it, sick!! A measly 89 miles for the month compared to 190+ in January and the 5 kilos i lost last month have nearly all been put back on again.

The CPC 5k is on next Sunday and it will be ran in hope more than expectation, can only run the best race i can on the day. Looking forward to seeing the end of this training block if i am truthfully honest. The podium i achieved at the Puinduinrun will be a highlight that will stay with me though for a long long time:):):).

Be no racing anyway, with Dr this morning and have fffin bronchitis, he berated me for not going to see him sooner after suffering for nigh on a month. I can provide you with some TbLesque support Sunday afternoon though!!!

Just read your podium spot, good man. That race sounded absolutely treacherous and horrific. Fair play.

Bronchitis I had a long time ago and is awful. It'll absolutley wipe you out so rest and recover properly before getting back into training.

March 1st-11th

No running at all, i’ve been on a heavy dose of antibiotics this past week which at times had me confined to the couch with dizziness due to the effects of one tablet. The CPC was Sunday but it wasn’t as the whole event was canceled leaving 41,000 odd runners very disappointed but it was the correct call by the organisers as the wind really picked up by afternoon time when the majority would have been on the route running the half marathon. Met & seen a number of Irish runners that evening who were over to run.

Feeling much better this week so back to the running, all easy for next while as since end of January i’ve missed 21 days running due to illness.

As you say, was the correct decision. Fine running around the open but there was a lot of branches coming down in the park areas. The council were flat out on Tuesday mornimg clearing it up...

Now, back to trainng for both of us!!!!
