Brexit Discussion Thread VI

Hi folks, as Theresa May has won the vote of no confidence and we are heading into Brexit day early next year, I thought for the new thread people might give their summary of their views on Brexit to date before we get into the more day to day discussions.

So what do you think about what has happened so far? Who has come off well, who has come off badly?

Where do you think Brexit is going? What is going to be the likely impact on Ireland, Northern Ireland, the rest of the U.K. and the E.U. respectively?

Both this thread and the Mark V thread will remain open simultaneously for the next day or so and Mark V will be closed as it gets closer to the server busting 10,000 mark. Hopefully we can set down a solid foundation now for a top quality thread to come!

Westminster has shown itself to be totally unfit for purpose. Just a chamber full of little posh boys and girls who live in a bubble all their lives and got everything handed to them. When it comes to actually doing something tangible like doing a deal or agreeing on something they're totally incapable. sad really

Having watched BBC News for the lads 2-3 hours....I only have 1 question:

Do MPs not realise the WA isnt going to be reopened and that their own government accepted it already???

Some space cases in WM that seem so far away from reality that it no longer suprises me that the whole thing is so mixed up.

The EU have stated many time the WA will not be reopened......UK Fecking accept it.

Next phase of the blame game has begun. May goes to Brussels with big smiles and warm words, pledging to battle for the British people.

They remind her - for the 1,000th time - that the backstop is not up for negotiation.

She returns to the UK and tells the country that Brussels has been intransigent and unreasonable. She then appeals to the Blitz spirit, stiff upper lip mentality that they are known for around the world.

Her country will be divided, the GFA will be in tatters, and she'll still have to return to the negotiating table only with a weaker hand, but on the plus side the Tories won't be so cross with her, the media will stop drawing funny pictures of her, and the DUP will pat her on the back for standing up to the bullies.

This is the woman that threw a strop at the suggestion she was 'nebulous'. To call her that is to be generous. She's criminally negligent.

So it looks like it’s a hard Brexit now, surely after all their strong statements of late, the EU can’t be seen to cave ?
Unless this is the point where the DUP go under the bus and the backstop is limited to NI and it passes with support from a few Labour MPs ?

The delusion here of course is that they crash out and the British border in Ireland just goes away as an obstacle to them getting what they want.
When they come back for a deal (which they will have to have) the British border is still going to have to be sorted out within the terms of the current deal and the GFA.

Could the EU cave? We still don't know what Westminster wants. They seem to want a change to the backstop. What that is nobody has said. Just that something should definitely be done about the border.

Two months out and that something should definitely be done about the border is the best that they have managed...

We dont always get what we want......at some point reality has to kick in. Having grown up along the border in the 80s-90s I also dont want it, however its time to sort this problem out and to stop the UK taking the mick

I’m just listening to him now, saying the EU want a deal.........
This is going to get very messy and very embarrassing for some side and I don’t think it’s the EU.
Yet part of me still thinks they can’t be that stupid. It’s a truly bizarre situation.
Reeling in the Years in 10 years time will be interesting.
