British Police are known for these sorts of ads, there was talk last October of 50/50 catholic recruitment for the PSNI again, currently it stands at 80/20 I think.

The argument with these ads is that minority officers are needed in order to be more effective at policing minority communities, whether the effectiveness of this policy is reflected in the real world is debatable.

I dont see the problem with it, if the majority of their employees are white men then surely that creates a bias. The add is not suggesting that they dont want white men in the police force, theyre encouraging different types of people to join. Surely that's a positive thing?

This sort of initiative doesn’t actually work anyway.

The Met Police tried limiting recruitment only to applicants from Greater London for a while to artificially increase the number of black and Asian police officers.

The scheme was such a roaring success that they quickly changed it back to allowing applicants from across Britain because diverse Londoners didn’t want to police their own city and recruitment fell off a cliff

The trouble that establishments have all across Europe is that although the continent may be becoming increasingly diverse, it will always have an indigenous white population. These people are always going to be the ones with a greater connection, emotional and familial, to the different arms of the state.. police, military, civil service etc, and will always feel a greater pull to them as a way of serving their homeland

My whole point is that while there may be good intentions behind these positive discrimination exercises from services that genuinely want to make use of all available talent and experience in a country regardless of race, they are doomed to failure with these counter productive ad campaigns that are going to achieve nothing except alienate large numbers of people in their traditional recruitment bases

There is of course quite a bit of irony about it.

Quite often the London Met police and various other police forces come under a lot of criticism for having a large majority of white, male officers on their payroll.

So in order to combat it, they put out an ad saying they're looking for more women and/or non-white people to sign up and they get lambasted because it's a stupid ad.

It's good to see they're actively answering people in the comments section though and clarifying it.

What is the relevance?

It’s been well publicised that the outsourcing of recruitment in the army to Capita has been a disaster on so many fronts, but it’s not connected to the kind of positive discrimination that the OP has highlighted.

Just to be clear, they're not getting worked up about recruitment.

They're getting worked up about a promotion event that comes before recruitment, designed to target the minority communities that historically haven't participated fully in the recruitment itself. It's just a way of giving information to a targeted group, but I guess some people just can't wait to be offended.
