It was embarrassing how few were there and yet they were making all of these lofty claims about toppling the government.

There were anti vaccine signs, anti flouride signs and I think I saw an anti cell tower mast sign.

It needs organisation...it needs the scale of the water charges... which actually worked...
It needs the gardai...to protect the people .. not the elite lawbreakers....and it need the majority to get up off their asses

Absolutely daft stuff. The vests themselves mean almost nothing here.

It's the political equivalent of people who turn up to the Aviva for their day out when Ireland play just to be seen and have something to do.

The problem with the Irish yellow vests are that they claim to be speaking for all of Ireland, when in reality they haven't a breeze and it's just a small minority of idiots.

They held a protest at 3pm on a week day outside the Dail, and when nobody showed up they started claiming people were just keyboard warriors. Even though everyone was in work at that time, making a living for themselves.

I don't even know what they are meant to be protesting and the more I find out about the yellow vest protests elsewhere the more I think they are vacuous attempts to moan about things the Government has little control over.

Yellow Vest Demands

1. We demand, Citizens initiated Referenda similar to Switzerland.
2. Immediate halt on all evictions and cameras allowed in all civil courts.
3. We demand that Leo Varadkar declare a General Election & resign.
4. Cervical Cancer HSE staff responsible fired & Simon Harris resign.
5. Constitutional protection of Ireland’s water from privatisation.
6. Medicinal Cannabis legalised immediately.
7. Abolish Vulture Funds.
8. Prohibition on TDs from being housing Landlords or beneficiaries.
9. Mortgage debt write off for all family homes similar to what Iceland did.
10. Return Ireland’s Oil & Gas reserves to public ownership.
11. An effective means to Remove corrupt Gardai, civil servants & judges.
12. Public banking prioritised over private Banking greed.
13. Immediate distribution of Food/fuel vouchers for people going hungry and cold.
14. Cap rent per bedroom to €400 per month.
15. Abolishment of the TV Licence.
16. Enforce full corporate tax rate on multinationals and collect revenues owed.
17. A Raise in minimum wage to actual living costs.
18. Abolish household charge and property tax.

My understanding of our corporate tax is that our effective corporate tax rate is actually higher than a lot of other European countries.

The rest is just generic anti Govt stuff which if it were ever enacted would make Ireland a far worse place to live.

Just for a bit of fun:

1. We demand, Citizens initiated Referenda similar to Switzerland. When we genuinely need a referendum and don't get one then fair enough. Otherwise I don't see the need and it's open to abuse (brexit).

2. Immediate halt on all evictions and cameras allowed in all civil courts. Absolute nonsense, everyone would stop paying their mortgages over night and the country would literally collapse.

3. We demand that Leo Varadkar declare a General Election & resign. Why?

4. Cervical Cancer HSE staff responsible fired & Simon Harris resign. Investigate what happened, why and make recommendations to reduce risk of similar happening again. Discipline appropriately and terminate employment where gross negligence. Why would Harris resign?

5. Constitutional protection of Ireland’s water from privatisation. This doesn't warrant constitutional protection, a law is sufficient.

6. Medicinal Cannabis legalised immediately. Full exploration of side effects and efficacy and implemented in line with existing medical guidelines and standards. I would however decriminalise recreational cannabis.

7. Abolish Vulture Funds. Provide an alternative way to manage distressed or substantially devalued assets or no deal on this one.

8. Prohibition on TDs from being housing Landlords or beneficiaries. This is pointless. The residential tenancies board helps lessee's enfranchise their substantial rights in Ireland. The main problem with the housing market (private and rented) is the bargaining power of the supplier against the people on the demand side. Either people refuse to pay what is sought or engage in some collective bargaining or the governments legislates for allowable profit margins for accommodation. Prohibiting TD's from being landlords would require you to prohibit TD's from being involved in any other form of commerce or it's unenforceable.

9. Mortgage debt write off for all family homes similar to what Iceland did. I don't know what Iceland did but anything to help people in negative equity should be considered within reason.

10. Return Ireland’s Oil & Gas reserves to public ownership. Only if we have the capacity to actually do something with those reserves. I'd rather we invested in green and renewable energy.

11. An effective means to Remove corrupt Gardai, civil servants & judges. Stupidest item on this list. Does this even require an explanation?

12. Public banking prioritised over private Banking greed. I'm very much against greed but this is purely virtue signalling with no indication of what kind of policy the protesters want. I would expect this from someone doing their junior cert.

13. Immediate distribution of Food/fuel vouchers for people going hungry and cold. Going to need proof that a reasonable number of people are falling outside the existing social safety net to justify this. I was cold and hungry at my kids training this morning - so where do I collect my vouchers?

14. Cap rent per bedroom to €400 per month. See 8 above.

15. Abolishment of the TV Licence. I don't watch RTE but I think having an independent tax payer funded public service TV station is worth while and worth paying for, even if just for the news.

16. Enforce full corporate tax rate on multinationals and collect revenues owed. I'm in favour of global tax harmonisation.

17. A Raise in minimum wage to actual living costs. I've no issue with a raise in minimum wage but 'living costs' should not be the sole derivative and it's a problematically simple way of calculating a minimum wage.

18. Abolish household charge and property tax. Property tax is actually one of the fairer ways to tax.

This entire list is mind blowingly immature, anti-government with little rationale, stupendously socialist with no reference to where the money will come from, regularly illegal and it seems to be in favour of handing the power of law enforcement to some new body or just generally to society.

It's utter madness. When people write absurd things on boards.ie I've taken to juts ignoring them and not responding. This is the social equivalent.

That was the catalyst, but the whole movement was around protesting over the cost of living, tax reforms, the afore mentioned citizens inititiave referendums and Macron's resignation.

The argument I never understand that they peddle around evictions, is that they blame the banks. I've seen plenty of comments on news sites and Facebook where they blame the bank, saying it's the bank's fault for approving the mortgage on a house that was beyond their means.

Now obviously the banks went mental with their 110% mortgages etc, but surely it's their own fault for not being a grown adult and realising there's no way in hell they could sustainably live that way?

And it's not as if the banks are just preying on them to miss their first repayment and dragging them out of the house that same day, a family member defaulted on their mortgage and the bank spent months trying to arrange payment plans etc with them, before she finally left after about a year of not paying her mortgage.
