What difference will any consular contact be ? He's been arrested by the Russians who don't give a toss what the West thinks and its not like a diplomat actually does anything when they visit. So apart from making some nice headlines what is the point, especially when it's most likely a political arrest.

You would want to be sure whatever embassy that you call on will come to your aid.The Irish embassy has a great record of getting people out..... even Brian Keenan(who was a US asset)and Ibrihim Halawa (who was by his own admission involved in a violent uprising).

More to that than what's reported. We have good diplomatic relations with Russia. Department of foreign affairs threw a Russian diplomat out recently enough. This is why the Irish guy is being held. Coincidentally, my great, great uncle on my da's side, Sean Garland was a regular visitor to the kremlin and gave me some insight on how the Russians operate. He also had free passage into North Korea. Didn't say much about that though. My little brother carried his coffin last week

Where those other two dopes are lucky to be alive, this guy looks more like a political chess piece in a bigger game. It is more about how the US and Russia settle this but this guy is looking to see will the Irish card get him out faster. I am not saying he completely innocent but its just part of a bigger game.

I doubt they would have known he was entitled to Irish citizenship until after they arrested him, if he wasn't travelling on an Irish passport.

I wouldnt read too much into Ireland chucking out some low level diplomat in accordance with European Union kicking out a few spies, who were possibly due to be rotated anyway. There is a big difference in held by the Gardai and being told you are a very very bold boy and Russian FSB "hospitality" and being intensively interviewed.
