Traveller immigration and dole threads

I would describe myself as somebody with a right of centre view and I always found it very frustrating that the left got their way is getting all threads closed.

Lately, boards have left these threads open and many people including myself have finally got to say what we wanted and on a level playing field, the narrative of the left has been destroyed.

Having said that these threads are becoming tiresome the fun has been sucked out of After Hours.
Not sure what the solution is but does anybody else think After Hours has become too polarised and serious?

But we've asked (Feedback etc.) ad nauseum and the powers to be want the contentious threads to stay in AH apparently.

Put the fun back in AH, and create a proper sub-forum for more serious topics.
The private members club PC v2 doesn't hack it. And it needs to be less rigid that the Politics forum.

Meh what's the point of trying to make fun threads anymore? There is a small chance it might take off or more likely you'll just get a handful of replies while the latest 'traveller watch' or liberal outrage gets a few hundred.. it's just not worth the effort

That's the solution really. AH has the most traffic, so it is the natural place for the readers to gravitate. Putting anyway serious threads elsewhere is the kiss of death to them, usually. So, have a sub-forum, for topics that are less casual that people want to bring to attention. And keep AH for people who want to talk about lighting their farts, getting drunk and having a laugh.

Also closing threads on stuff people want to talk about, no matter how it offends some, is probably the reason multiple threads arise on the same things.

I have seen some thread closures recently that honestly looked like the whimsical, even petty, decision of a Mod for no particularly good reason.

Traveller immigration is not something that comes up here very often. I've head some of them have moved on to France to tramac drives and sell faulty generators as everyone in the UK is now wise to them.
I also think we need a new name for them as they don't travel much.

I've lost count of the number of times that I, 'a leftie poster', have been banned or infracted over the last year or two - almost always for fairly innocuous attempts at humour. By and large, immigrants bring something to our society, and statistics show that they're as likely as the educated Irish to work.

I'd hate a society that didn't welcome those coming here for a better life, and that will contribute. They're nothing like the travellers, or those on the dole that are unwilling to work

Unfortunately many of the current crop of economic migrants don't fit your description, or the ethos of the previous generation of migrants from places like Poland.

The current wave arriving in Europe arrive with their hand out, and by and large that doesn't change.

Agreed. I dont ever bother clicking into them because I know it will just be two lads having a multi quote battle ad nauseum. Thats basically the gist of it, the virtual closure of the Politics Cafe means all these political threads have populated After Hours instead. We had a giant big feedback thread on it a while back and people by and large wanted the Cafe re-opened to all so AH would get back to its remit of fun. But the mods say the Cafe was a huge timesink for them and are reluctant to re-open it properly. Its a crap situation imo but the Admins dont seem to want to fix it either.

How do you stop people using those words?

Even if that were possible, why should one person get to dictate what views another can or cant express.

There are certain legal issues of course but thats for another day.

Personally, I find it more offensive that anyone would want to curtail the rights of another person to express themselves, no matter how repugnant they might find the views expressed. I can understand if those view were incorrect or illegal but to avoid offence is just juvenile in my view.

While there are a few nutters and eejits contributing to such threads on AH you can at least get a lively debate, whereas in Politics it seems there are too few contributing.

After Hours has dropped off the cliff in the last twelve months. I still check here and post here most days, but there can be times I mightn't check in for a day or two and when I have a look back in, increasingly I've found that I've missed little to nothing. It's mainly just habit that keeps me here. I honestly can't remember the last truly interesting thread I contributed too. The place has gone to shit. It really has.

It seems to go a lot like this - Guy half-hears or reads something in the news that involves a group in society that isn't exactly just like him. Posts about it, giving an off the cuff anecdotal opinion or even a paragraph of guff, which is asserted like an absolute catergorical fact. People pile on, sensing a good opportunity to have a good half-baked whinge. One or two people offer an opposing viewpoint, to try to stick up a bit for context or nuance or even just facts and are shouted down by the hot-take hordes: "SNOWFLAKE!," FEMINAZIS!", "BOARDS. IE LIBERAL BIAS" - and so-on and so-on. Until the thread becomes a battle to the Internet death between people who should get a life.

There was always dole bashing, immigration bashing, feminism bashing and traveller bashing threads but they were somewhat contained. Now that often feels like that's all there is. Wall to wall reactionary half-baked hot-takes. Clicking in a lot of these threads is bloody depressing. People banging on about liberal bias and snowflakes, oblivious to the fact that the place is now skewed towards people who think just like them and talk just like them.

Very true nothing has changed. The people who are complaining now have just been on here long enough to get bored of it.
