There's a reason why European banks aren't setting up in Ireland to take advantage of these "high rates" as you suggest. The Irish mortgage market is utterly dysfunctional. People can go years and years without paying their mortgage with no consequence. Courts don't enforce repossession laws. There was a story in the papers recently of a couple who are paying nothing to their mortgage and are over €300k in arrears and they were given a 12 months stay on repossession by the courts!!! Lunacy. This dysfunction leads to higher rates to cover the losses from these people not paying and who can't be touched.

Sure, Dublin is a nice place to live. But if you cant afford it, live somewhere you can afford a roof.
It will take time for Dublin to embrace living higher from the ground, and the planning authorities have the power to dismiss objectors quickly and cheaply so that housing density can be increased. But it will always be expensive to live with the facilities a functioning capital city has, and not one that for decades had the relief valve of emigration giving the illusion that living in such a city was cheap and for everyone. People are kicking a little because they dont like that reality. But they will get over it.

Both of my adult kids are dealing with the problem of the Dublin housing crisis on a daily basis. One has the house sold from under him earlier this year causing him a lot of stress and hassle, but he got stuck in and managed to find another place to rent before the couch surfing had to start. It's a sub-optimal gaff, but tolerable. So, instead of howling at the moon, he gets on on with it.

Incidentally, where in my post did I suggest that you were unemployed? It looks as though those voices in your head are really playing tricks with you this evening! That may partly explain why you find other people's reasoned attitudes so laughable. Currently 89 apartments in Dublin for rent on daft under €1,500.

Haven’t looked at myhome or any other sites.

I’m not aware of a FFG party. Nor am I involved in any political party.

I’m a firm believer in paying my way and raised my children to do the same. They’re too busy getting established in their careers and enjoying their lives and relationships to be bringing multiple babies into the world with no way of supporting them.

Dublin is a very wealthy capital, its never going to be cheap, its a very important city for its size.
