The estate is on UK plates anyway, so it'll cost more than 1750 with VRT

Edit, receipt has an Irish reg, but who knows, if your selling a car, why use old pictures before it was VRT'd. Was it a cleaner car then? is the seller hiding something?

The 1.6 is actually a good engine if looked after correctly. That means religiously changing the oil with the recommendation oil and not other oil, like 90% of Irish and other lazy 1.6 psa diesel owners.
There is an oil pickup pipe that leads to the turbo, the gauge gets blocked (wrong oil) and starves the turbo- then bang.
It’s a design flaw yes, however it can be circumvented. Any 1.6 diesel without a reliable history at that mileage is cheap for a good reason.
Cheap tax on one hand yes. Garage bills and a non running car on the other.... no

Estate only has NCT to January so a bit of a gamble. The hatch isn't much better being till March.

The 1.8 has more work to replace timing belts, think it's a wet and dry from what a guy in work said.

Both the 1.6 and 2.0 only have 1 belt seemingly.

So something to check if looking to get a good run out of them and price up maintenance.

I'm not sure I'd agree with that methodology when it comes to cheap diesel cars unless it was something old school like a Mk 1 Octavia or Superb. The OP however is looking for something from 2009 or newer so most of the old school less complex stuff was no longer sold or taxied beyond their usefulness.

Also 200 miles over two days and the car sitting up for the rest of the week is far from outside the realm of a petrol car. Petrol cars generally can live a quieter life than diesels so I'd still be of the opinion that the OP will get a better condition and hassle free petrol car than diesel for their budget.

Dunno, maybe mostly they are, petrol types would easily be as jaded, There was a low mileage one a few posts back, but its gone from donedeal already, even if you got a year out of something at cheap money so long as it ran, especially if there is any tax on it could cost little and tide someone over in the interim of getting something more expensive.
