Selling Passat 181

I'm looking to sell my 181 passat. It's the same as this except with about 25k km on the clock.

What's the best route to go? Im going for an older kinda performance car so dealers won't take it off my hands. I'd be happy with 26.5k (think It retailed at €35.5k) for it but apparently over 5k on done deal privately doesnt get looked at and carzone similar.

Am I just stuck with it unless I buy new ( which isn't an option for the car I'm looking, not at present anyway)

Your target market is small, majority of people spending that much on a car will probably be availing of finance. Some lenders will insist on the buyer buying from a registered dealer. People also like the peace of mind of buying from a dealer plus your also competing against importing one from the UK.

It's not impossible to sell a car of that value privately but just might take a long time. Have you approached the dealer you originally bought it off of to see if they will buy it back? You will certainly take a hit on it but your going to take a hit either way.

I did mention it to original dealer but he has plenty to sell himself, albeit more expensive. Finance is the big issue tbf. Just have to find someone with a bag of money who wants my exact car.... or wait like 5 years until I get my money's worth out of it

A buddy of mine was in same situation with a 171 Passat that had loads of toys over a Highline but didn't even get a phone call even though it was cheaper than cars the dealer's had.

It would need to be very significantly cheaper for anyone to be bothered really. Even then as others pointed out it’s a limited space. I wouldn’t spend the guts of €30k buying privately tbh

Tried to sell a car a few years back on DD and CarZone....priced at €9,999, which was very competitive.

On for several months. Not a single call.

I think hoping to get someone to buy privately for 30k is a very long shot tbh. It might be a good deal, and you might get a very knowledable person at the right time, but its unlikely.

I was considering upgrading to a bigger car than a Golf.....do you want to stick up a few pics of yours?

I'd be happy to buy a car second hand for 25k plus but would be looking for a decent discount on a dealer.

I'd have to meet the seller and only do a bank transfer.

I'm afraid you will lose your shirt selling a new car after less than one year.

Your best bet is to have a chat with the dealer you bought it off. They might be willing to buy it back and you might be surprised as to what they offer. Might not be as bad as you think!

Don’t put yourself through the agony of DoneDeal. I don’t know how people do that. The Passat is a fine car but it’s un-remarkable. It’ll be hard to make it stand out from the crowd in a private sale unless it’s extremely cheap.

Well I'm looking for about 6k less than what the same model/colour/make/toys etc. Is with the dealers. I reckon warranty is transferable?

The link in my OP is kind of the car the. Although I reckon it's more flattering than that and I should prob take a few photos of my own. Especially the cockpit area, android auto system.

I had the same passat before this one, it came to the end of the pcp and without putting much thought into and I bought that one, not realising a midlife crisis was around the corner and that I'd want something ridiculous.

I'd go for the ecoboost because.. ireland. There were a few up this year at sub 30k, not very many in black so will prob have to wrap.

The link you provided has, imho, crap pictures. They are very blocky and low res, which for a dealer is poor.

I take it yours is a highline model?

Yeah it's the high line, with sport pack (full leather and upgraded alloys) and tech pack which is kind of extra but I'd say there are very few highline passats that dont have it. I'll grab a few pictures today hopefully.

So your car is on pcp with vw bank. Do you know what the settlement figure is currently?
This will put more buyers off even though it shouldn't. Anyway, why not trade in to dealer for a mustang?

20k on the clock
2.0/150
Highline

Sport Pack
Heated screen
( I think 41,300 new)
I got offered 17k against a new Volvo s60 R spec
went back to where I bought it and was offered 21k against a new one
Got the same story at whatever dealer I went to.
* We can buy them in from the UK for buttons*
As a result I gave VW the middle finger.
Bought the Mondeo instead, got a good bit more for the Passat from the Ford dealer, AND, the passat didn't last a week in the Ford dealership when it was snapped up.
Trade in the Passat against a new Mustang ?

Yeah amount owed is low enough for a pcp. Tbf I'd be happy for the person write a bank draft to vw if they wanted. I'll be getting a bank loan anyway so I don't mind getting that sorted before sale either.

Yeah the new mustang is about 55k, new model out in December too, although not sure if it's coming to ireland. I was hoping to keep the loans around 30k though

Trade it in for a used mustang on hp. Garage will still take care of Pcp details on yours.

I did visit Ford airton, they have a fairly high mileage mustang in a not so attractive colour that's slightly over priced. He said taking my car in isn't really option because it's to close to the price of mustang. So a private sale or a new mustang are the options

There are two 2017 Mustangs for sale by a Ford dealer in Tralee, asking 40k-42k. Worth getting a figure off them, I'd imagine a Passat would be easy enough to sell on down in Kerry. Both cars are D reg too if that's a concern.

The nomads down that way LOVE a passat, they would sell it handy enough.

Try a dealer who specialises in UK imports such as M6 motors in Galway. They may be able to bring in your mustang and trade the passat against it.

Yeah they look gd. Was hoping to see a bit more of a drop in them but I suppose it's all relative. Reg. Location isn't something that bothers me. I thought the passat would be snapped up with the guys trying to offload the mustang in Ford tallaght because it'd be an easier car to sell but I suppose they'd rather keep Ford's on their forecourt

Mustangs are a niche model here and available in small numbers so dealers probably can afford to hold out for strong money on them especially in Dublin where there is probably a bigger market for the Mustang. Passats are two a penny unfortunately and cheaper ones from the UK don't help either. As Mr Bond says Passat have a cult following down in the west/south west whereas a Mustang probably doesn't have a huge appeal so the dealer down there might be more open to trading.

Mustang in Airton marked as sold, so i was wrong there. No wonder the sales guy was pretty short with me, he must of had it on the way out the door.

Gotta get some photos of mine, only have a smart phone camera but will have to do.

Both have positives and minuses when comparing like for like
I would say the Mondeo is a bit quieter on the road.
The Mondeo seats are absolutely more comfortable ( For me with my ailment, ) but for the regular person they may like the Passat seats,
On longer trips is where the Mondeo shines for comfort.

I would say both handle very similar.

The Passat would certainly be more fuel efficient,
sticking within the speed limits say on a Fermoy~Dublin trip, Pending weather and conditions the Passat would be at least 5mpg better.
Best I saw on the Passat on that trip was 64mpg
Best on the Mondeo was 53mpg,
but that was once off in the Passat for some reason,
Normally it would hover around 57/58 on that trip.

Baring in mind the Passat had 18" wheels and the Mondeo is running on 19's which would more than likely account for a couple of mpg shortfall.

Other than that I can see no reason why I would choose one over the other,
If it was based purely on looks I would take the Mondeo all day.

I would give them both the same.
One thing I do miss about the Passat is the auto handbrake, That was a dream to have, if only Ford could do one the same.

If the car is right, and is priced correctly it'll sell.

Think of a potential cash buyer - he gets a very fresh car with a factory warranty for a nice few bob less than the dealer will charge.

Offered in the ballpark of where I want to be at for the passat by them. Going to try and get ball rolling with it.
