RTE again: Brendan Courtney pimping his whole family now...

I know we’ve had many many threads on the colossal waste of money that is RTE and its nepotistic, cronyist culture, obscenely fat salaries for at best mediocre presenters and constantly bullying us with endless TV license adverts.

I know that presenter Brendan Courtney had a show on last year called We’ve Got To Talk About Dad - about his elderly father’s progressive dementia and how it was affecting the quality of his life and that of his family. Ok - that was I suppose fair enough...

...but now he’s got another show about his dear old mam, who seems to be a bit of a loo-lah. I mean,WTF??

What next, a show about his sister, his cousin, the family cat? Honestly when will this crap be called in?

Quite clearly a follow up type program to the one mentioned. Don't really see the issue. Hardly that confusing really.

He's putting a human face (and story) on the struggles a lot of people have when dealing with the health system. I think it's good that these things are highlighted.

I don't think anybody had an issue with that program but his latest one is basically about his healthy mother and what should do with her.

It's at times like this that I'm grateful for all the TV channels available to us. Imagine having no choice but watching RTE. As it stands, it's catch the News then switch to something half decent elsewhere.

I like Brendan Courtney. And I think it's high time people had a good long think about getting older and what it means, while they are still able to make arrangements and get about. Typically, this sort of thing isn't discussed in Ireland until after it has become a big problem. This program won't do one bit of harm.

I saw Alan Hughes advertising himself 'as the first openly gay Irish presenter' on tv as well. But there was also a presenter on Bosco who was out. And didn't Bill Hughes come out too, shortly after 1993 when homosexuality was legalised? Like, Brendan, Alan etc were waaaay behind the curve, tbqh.
I suppose the difference between Hanley, and the Bosco guy, was they were 'open' with friends, and behind the scenes, but weren't 'open open'-audiences didn't know, or at least straight audiences didn't.

I think Courtney was the first 'flaming, you absolutely know he's not straight' presenter.
Even Bill Hughes hid it better.

Are you serious? From the advert, he's taking her out to Spain, or Florida, to look at 'retirement' villas-like, how is that relatable? Most people are lucky to find a nursing home close to home.
And it's not discussing old age-it's more a puffpiece promotion for himself and his mam, more out of the pages of Baz Ashmawy then anyone else.

His dad suffered debilitating strokes (more than one I believe), he had to go into a care home. That was horrible, but relatable to many. If you've dealt with an ill relative or grandparent, you know how much planning you have to do.
As well as the sense of feeling like you've let them down when you realise you're not able to look after them.

This feels like a disgusting attempt to milk the situation.

I thought his documentary about his father was very good. It brought an issue to the fore that many people are either dealing with now or will have to face in the future. If he and his family are willing to put a human face to this, that's fine by me. I'll reserve judgement until I've seen the programme in question.

The man is mildly successful , got his family a gig and Rte spent their dollars. Good luck to him.

And no I'm not a fan of him but anybody who can get some success for themselves and their family doesn't deserve to be shamed for doing it. It was a somewhat enjoyable watch with some amount of food for thought.

A few posters on this thread must be jealous they aren't on d'telly.

Attention would be better drawn to Sinead Ryan the expert in nothing that's rolled out for everything

Put me in the 'really can't stand him' category...

It was his dad I felt sympathy for, because why wouldn't you? That could be anyone of us in that situation. And from all accounts, he was a genuine good man. (When Courtney came out to his dad, he was of the 'ah, fair play to ya' variety. Not a single ounce of homophobia on his part. That makes him a good person in my eyes).

Brendan Courtney I don't like. Sorry.
