The whole business of fashion is you are paying for the brand name as a status symbol ,eg i can afford to pay 1000 euro for a strap or
a bag with a certain label on it .
Also many shops make knock off copys of certain clothes which they sell at a lower price.
Those items are priced so only the rich can afford to buy them.
Theres a whole industry where they just make identical copys of gucci ,prada
bags etc which are sold at markets .
These are luxury items, no one really needs a gucci bag.
Anyone can just buy clothes in pennys, dunne stores and still look good.

You're right about the status symbol. I used to work in a high end department store years ago in London. There were a handful of different customers (usually middle aged women) who would come in on Saturday afternoons and buy a fortune because they wanted to be seen to be buying a fortune. It was like a social event for them, 'accidentally' bumping into each other and comparing what they bought. Real Hyacinth Bucket behavior.

They would then return all the stuff during quiet times during the following weekdays.

I used to work with buyers in a similar type of store. Some are nice enough people, most I've come across are full of their own sense of self importance.

Was at a Xmas market last year, the stuff being sold was laughable; reindeer and other things made out of rough logs and sticks, a child could do better.
