Considering Casey was languishing at 1-2% before he made those comments, the swing in his favour is significant.

However I’m extremely alarmed by his follow up. Is that the mentality in the media? Shape the public opinion not simply report it?

When the next election pops up they will be hounding every local councilor not to vote for him. The likes of FG & FF Will pull rank and tell the councillors how to vote.

Populist politicians always appeal to a persons lesser nature. It's all about picking a group of people and blaming them.

So people see him and see that he dislikes travellers and think "I dislike them too". That's my guy. It's a single voting issue and it's one of the dumbest issues. Even on that issue it's a dumb position. It's not like the guy actually offered any solutions.

Casey is a self made man. That is to be admired, not a stick to beat him with.

Our welfare system is a huge burden on this country and it's something to has to be acknowledged, along with looking at the reasons why this is so. Sticking our heads in the sand and ignoring it is not going to help.

Possibly. It's a long thread. I am however seriously fed up with all this virtue signalling garbage, snowflake too. I love arguing but when posts contain all these new US buzzwords, I feel they lack substance.

Virtue signalling is an empty phrase. In using it the poster themselves are essentially virtue signalling a lot of the time. They're virtue signalling that they're not "virtue signallers". It's almost a recursive phrase.

Never heard Casey saying he "disliked" travellers, nothing of the sort. But don't let facts get in the way of your argument.

People who voted for Casey were making a statement about the system here. Attempting to turn it into some sort of racist agenda weakens your argument.

Precisely. And I think voting for them based on their view of travellers is even dumber.

Really the only qualifications we should be looking for is how they talk and act. They will be a representative for Ireland around the world. Their opinion on travellers shouldn't matter a bit as to how they do the job.

I will say that although Casey's opinions don't matter, voicing them and how he voices them does matter.
