It't not like he could do anything about them anyway, just remind us all every single time he appears in public, that he's there because of mutual hatred of a defined group of people.

It is not about hating Travellers. Free speech is under danger from everything becoming more and more PC, if you hold the ‘wrong’ view as in it not promoted by the media or it is is something kept quiet, then one is condemned and it is like a measure to try and silence people.
People are getting fed up of that and Peter Casey is who one would vote for if they believe in free speech.
We had 5 candidates who towed the PC line to avoid criticism, and 1 who didn’t and got condemned for saying what he believed rather than saying what the media types and liberals wanted to hear.
The same media who promoted a stunt by a Traveller and championed her but strangely quiet when their heroine was charged for theft.
Hating people is wrong, but covering up problems in any group of people does no one any favours.

I suspect for Casey to win, under 35's with a penchant for taking the piss would have to turn out in droves to steer it away from Mickey D. Since that won't happen and it will probably be mainly old folks (like me) voting, then it's two terms for MDH.

Casey said nothing incorrect about travellers and the outrage from the other candidates showed them up to be simple and out of touch.

No, I'm not looking to "pick on" anyone.

Genuinely surprised at the numbers online here saying they voted for him. I don't know what he has done to justify it. Some of the others haven't done too much either but there is a definite cluster for Casey

So I'm asking why they voted for him. In other words, convince me to give him my vote later on if you can.

That is the Irish mentality in a nutshell...as long as everyone loves us it's all good.

I find that insecurity nauseating.

We have a deeply dysfunctional state, we cannot provide affordable accomodation for our citizens, we cannot provide decent healthcare for our citizens, we do not protect our citizens from the actions of unaccountable powerful figures within our State Institutions, including rogue elements ie. Martin Callanan, we have a highly centralised state which makes the entire apparatus of the state very vulnerable to group think. We have a very unique and outdated political system that essentially requires all political parties to attempt to please all the citizens all the time!

On the surface this country is idyllic but only scratch the surface and you'll see the consequences of all that dysfunction.

There's nothing particularly endearing about Michael D. In addition, it is a bit embarrassing having him as our president as it perpetuates the Irish leprechaun stereotype when he is wheeled out to represent us.

The president is not the person to change this.

A president is supposed to represent all the people of the state.

Travellers when they break the laws need to be treated the same as any other member of society, but this is a policing and judicial matter, not something that the president has any power over.

And while crime certainly is more prevalent amongst travellers, not all travellers are criminals, and tarring them all with the same brush and writing them off as criminals before they've even finished primary school is not a long term solution.

If Travellers are an ethnic minority as they are recognised to be, the state should be using this as a way to give extra support to those members of the travelling community who want to escape from the cycle of poverty and crime.

I don't like the way that Ireland is going at the moment, the sense of entitlement by many people, the levels of selfishness, and the inability to be allowed to express any opinion that is opposed to left view liberals.

Casey has voiced opinion against these things and therefore got my vote.
