I currently have the Xperia XZ and its...grand. For me, the problem has always been that it is just too big. I hate large phones that have woeful battery and are massive in my pocket. I just don't need that size.
I had the Z3 Compact or Z5 Compact before and I loved it, it was the perfect size in my opinion.
Now I am contemplating trading in my XZ to Cex where I will get 100 quid roughly and purchasing a XZ1 compact. I can get one of those for around 290 on ebay.
Is this a good idea? Are there any upcoming compact phones that I should be aware of? I have tried searching but the market seems to be totally finished for compact phones like this.

Screen size is getting bigger in general so don't think any company will be prioritizing smaller screens unfortunately

yes the sony compact is pretty much the only reasonable small phone.
other options are phones that are not too big - around the samsung s8 size
the problem with the big sony phones is that they feel bigger than then even are with the square edges that they usually have. they also have large bezels making them bigger.
mi a2 lite is a phone that is not too big at all in the budget segment that is very capable on stock android and with amazing battery life.
it's only 3/4 inch longer than the x21 compact and is thinner
